MR. CHURCHILL’S CHARGES
PRIVILEGE BREACH DENIED. [BRITISH OFFICIAL WIRELESS.] RUGBY, .June 8. The Committee of Privileges of the Commons, to whom was referred a complaint macle by Mr Winston Churchill, that the action of Sir Samuel Hoare and of Earl Derby, members of the joint committee of Indian constitutional reform, in influencing the Manchester Chamber of Commerce, or any branch of it, to withdraw' evidence they had already submitted and to substitute other altered evidence, constituted a breach of privilege report, “they are satisfied that neither Sir S. Hoare nor Earl Derby behaved in such a way that they should be held to have tampered with any witness, or to have attempted to bring about, improperly, the alteration of any evidence to be given on behalf of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce and other bodies. The advice, both of Sir S. Hoare and Earl Dei by was sought by the Chamber, and given in the manner described in the report. The committee come to the conclusion that the advice given at no time took the form of pressure or intimidation or interference of any kind with the freedom of the Chamber and of the bodies associated with them, to form and express their own opinions honestly in the light of all the facts then known to (hem. What was called pressure was no more than advice. The Committee therefore unanimously report that there was no breach of privileges committed by Sir S. Hoare and Earl Derby.”
