REEFTON NOTES
[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] REEFTON, June 9. Mrs George Black is visiting Reefton. Mrs A. Eager ,who has been an inmate of the Inangahua Hospital, undergoing surgical treatment, has returned home. Mr and Mrs Cornell, of Ballarat, are visiting Mr and Mrs McHenry, of Blackspoint. At a sitting of the Magistrate s Court, held at Reefton on Thursday, before Mr H. Morgan, S.M., the following civil cases were heard: A. Renwick v. Harold Prior, judgment bjf default for plaintiff for £5/3/-and, costs £l/12/6. Harold Bros. v. A. R. Greatbach, judgment by default for plaintiff for £23/2/1 with costs £4 1/6.
The following applications were heard at the Warden’s Court, Reefton, on Thursday, before Mr 11. Morgan as Warden: —A . Rubbo and others, for an extension of time lor six mc*nths.—Granted. A. Wills for an ordinary prospecting license over 50 acres.—Granted subject to Forestry conditions. Blackwater Mines, Ltd., for reduction in rent on three claim licenses. —Adjourned. John Collins for residence site near Alexander mine.-—Granted subject to Forestry conditions. John O’Connor v. Waitahu G.M. C 0.., claim for reimbursement of moneys
expended in ventilating plant. Evi-! dence was given by Phillip Thomas, manager for the defendant company,! who stated that he knew the tunnel j constructed by O’Connor and party, i ! The length of this was 907 feet. Wit-1 ' nc-ss considered that O’Connor was | I uware that ventilating would have to! be installed. He was not asked at . any time by O’Connor to instal ventilating plant. Witness supervised the] hauling of the engine and drill to the mouth of the tunnel .and also, Carriage of ventilating pipes. He told j O’Connor the pipes and plant belong-1 cd to O'Connor, but O’Connor did not j claim ownership. The company had i three other ventilating plants operating on the work, and with the exception of the one which the company bought, the other two plants were removed by the contractors. O’Connor held two prospecting licenses in tho area, which the tunnel traversed. O’Connor found a lead of quartz in ■
the tunnel, but the Waitahu Coj r . did not take any stone out of the tunnel f.nd test same, or stack same. Counsel for both parties placed a number oi' legal points before the Warden, and, as argument was also to be submitted in writing, decision was reserved.
The Warden intimated that in order to clear up work which had accumulated, a special sitting of the Court would be held on Friday, June
15. , T The annual ball concluded by the Inangahua Rugby Union in the Gymnasium Hall last night was a decided success, and the floor was filled almost to capacity. The Happiness Boys of Hokitika provided the music. A novelty supper was appreciated. Mr W. Hunt made an excellent M.C. Extras were provided by Mesdames Eklund and Lawn and Miss Doken. « =
