f MANY EMPIRE MESSAGES. <BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN.—COPYEIGHT.] LONDON, June 4. His Majesty spent his sixty-ninth birthday quietly at Buckingham Palace. A large crowd assembled outside the Palace in the morning, hoping to see His Majesty, but he did not leave the Palace. The Princess Royal brought presents from her two sons to the King. Gifts also arrived from the Duke and York’s children. The Princess Royal and the Duke of Gloucester lunched with their parents. Greetings poured in from all parts of the Empire. Every one was read by the King. A special staff remained on duty at the Palace telegraph office to deal with the messages and replies. To celebrate the King’s Birthday, Sir J. Simon to-night gave a dinner at the Foreign Office, at which the heads of,all the diplomatic missions in London, and members of the Cabinet were present.'
CANADIAN HONOURS OTTAWA, June 5. A Knighthood has been conferred on Doctor Banting, the insulin discoverer, and Charles Edward Saunders, retired Dominion cerealist, who developed four wheats which made Canada famous. AUCKLAND PARADE. AUCKLAND, June 4. A military parade held in the Domain here to-day in honour of the King’s Birthday provided an inspiring spectacle. The day was beautifully fine and warm, and the public attendance was the largest in recent years, and it seemed that all present were more fully conscious of the significance of the occasion. Three thousand officers and men from the three services took part and accorded a royal salute to the Governor-General, with whom were the Mayor (Mr Hutchison), General Sinclair-Burgess, Rear-Admiral Burgess-Watson, Mr J. Cobbe (Minister of Defence), Major J. G. Coates, Colonel Sir Stephen Allen, and Colonel J. M. McCarroll.
Secondary school cadet battalions, under Captain Judson, V.C., were subsequently congratulated by Lord Bled'isloe on their marching. The. colours were carried by the Royal Navy, Hauraki and Waikato Regiments, King’s College and Auckland Grammar School, and by a New Zealand E.F. guard composed of officers and men of the Auckland regiment, who served in the war. THANKS TO NEW ZEALAND. AUCKLAND, June 4. The King has sent to the GovernorGeneral the following reply to His Excellency’s message:—“l warmly thank you, my Governor-General, for the affectionate greetings and good ■wishes which you have sent on my birthday from the Government and people of New Zealand. Please assure them how much 1 appreciate these loyal sentiments. —George R. 1."
