CIVIL SERVICE WAGES
APPEAL FOR “CUT”RESTORATION [FEB PBEBB ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, May Hi. A deputation representing all the branches of the Government service, teachers, presented to Mr. Forbes today a full statement in support ol their representations for (he restoration of their salary reductions. Mr. Forbes’ reply was to the eltect that till the Government had received an estimate of what the finances would be during the coining year, it would be impossible for him Io indicate that, any of the cuts would be restored When they had all ol the information regaiding the finances before them, they would be able to go into the position. No one would be better pleased than members of the Government to restore the cuts, it it were at. all possible. He had a great deal of sympathy' for the civil service, and especially for those who were on lower incomes. The Government had imposed the cuts only because the. finances of the country would not stand up to the payment of full wages. It. had been laced with two alternatives, either to reduce wa-es or to reduce staffs; and it had considered the best thing to do was to reduce wages.
