FOOD AND LABOUR
MINIMUM DIET ESTIMATES. [BY CABLE—PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] LONDON, May 16. A Joint Committee, representing the Ministry of Health and the British Medical Association, reports that the minimum diet which a man should have when engaged in heavy work should be based on from 3400 to 4000 calories per day; and that of a woman in active work should be based on from 2800 to 3000 calories per day. The Committee state that the all-round average requirements of the entire population, or of large mixed groups of people, are at present about 3000 calories per day. A calory is a unit used to express the fuel of energy value of food; also a quantity of food capable of producing such a unit of enegy.
