They were exhausted and suffering from exposure. The men said that (hoy obtained a dinghy on Rangitoto, and rowed in a rough sea to a point on the mainlan.l which they did not know. They walked inland and followed the roads until they reached Papatoploe, where they found a small car. This limy drove till the petrol had gone out. and they continued southward. Asked why they had escaped, they said they were ‘Tod up with it and hated it all." Macandrew was due for discharge in a. few weeks, and Taylor in less than throe months.
