June 16. —South Canterbury. WANGANUI CONCLUDES. RIOTOUS WINS STEEPLES. WANGANUI, May 12. The weather was tine for the second day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting, and the attendance was large. The track was in excellent order. The investments on the totalisator to-day totalled £12,901/10/-, making £21,796 for the meeting, an increase of £3343 on last year. Results: —■ Farewell Hack Handicap, five furlongs.—l—Moneygran (L. J. Ellis) 1; 2—Cawbeen 2; s—Wharangi 3. All started. Won by a neck. Time 1.1 2-5. Pu.rua Hack Handicap, six furlongs. —4—Gay Seton (R. Reed) 1; 6—Land Tax 2; s—Lady Ronald 3. Scratched: Cawbeen and Moneygran. Won by half a length. Time 1.14 2-5. May Hurdles Handicap, one mile and five furlongs.—4—Easterly (A. M’Donald) 1; I—High Grader 2: 12— Jayson 3. All started. Won by a head. Time 2.56 3-5.

Sixteen contested the May Hurdles. Count Lendroff, Consent f and Million were the early leaders, but at the halfmile Higli Grader and Easterly closed up, the latter leading into the straight, but High Grader made a big effort, and' .they fought out a great finish. The others were well back.

Brown Abbey led' for the first half mile. Then Don Erma took charge and held command until the turn for home, where Brown Abbey headed him. Then Riotous went into the lead and won comfortably' from Manuiri. !

Sixteen started. Silver King, with a most impressive dash, ran right away from Watson in the straight and won by eight lengths. Time 1.131. OWNER COMPLAINS. ADELAIDE, May 13. The South Australian Jockey Club Stewards yesterday held an inquiry into a complaint of rough riding in the Goodwood Handicap on the previous Saturday. No fewer than sixteen jockeys, including A. Reed, were asked to explain. Reed rode Verdique, whose owner made a complaint. All riders except Reed, who is in Melbourne, declared the race was cleanly run. The stewards dismissed the complaint. MOONEE VALLEY HURDLES MELBOURNE, May 12. At Moonee Valley races the Banya Hurdles resulted: —Sarokos 10.0 (Zelly) 1; Riawena. 9.9 (Healey) 2; Harding 9.7 (Dynon) 3. Eight start, ed, including the New Zealander Spring Abbey. Although left at the barrier, Sarokos made up the lost ground, and won comfortably by three and a-half lengths, with three-quar-ters of a length between second and

third. Spring Abbey was sixth. Time ENGLISH RACING LONDON, May 12. The Jubilee Stakes resulted: — Cotoneaster .1, Blue Boy 2. Scarlet Tiger 3. Fourteen started. Won by a neck; third one and a-half lengths away.
