DONOVAN BEATS FRANKLIN. [PB® PBBISS ASSOCIATION.] HASTINGS, April 16. Tommy Donovan, 9.4, staged a come-back at Napier, last night, when he defeated Franklin (Gisborne) 9.5, in a 15-rounds lightweight bout, which went the full distance. From the beginning, Donovan took the aggressive, and scored repeatedly with lefts to the head. He was also superior in in-fighting. Franklin stood up to heavy punishment. His powerful right leads to the head repeatedly went wide. The winner gained hearty applause from the large attendance, when the fight was awarded in his favour. In a six-round professional contest, Huriie (Petone) 8.10, outboxed Richardson (Petohe) 9.0, and gained the decision after the fight went the full six rounds. VARNER BEATS EDWARDS. SYDNEY, April 16. At the Stadium, to-night, the American, Claude Varner, 9.1, outpointed Llew Edwards, 9.3, in 15 rounds. Varner is unorthodox, and fights the whole distance with his head down. His opponent was unable to penetrate his defence, DEMPSEY’S WATERLOO. PHILADELPHIA (U.S.), April 6. , Jack Dempsey, the former world’s heavyweight boxing champion, to-day lost a ring battle and ignominiously retreated from the scene of the conflict. Dempsey was referee of a wrestling bout, and he disqualified Johnny Plummer for kicking.
