To-day’s Racing News

Trotting

meetings to come.

April 21—Te Aroha. April 21 — Kaikoura. April 26.— Marlborough. April 28.—Auckland. May 3, 5.— Forbury Park. May 5. —Cambridge. May 12. —Oamaru. May 12, 14.—Waikato, June 2, 4.— Canterbury Park.

In the Shade: Red Shadow seems to be a pit in thb shade of popularity ihsted of the limelight he occupied at the Aldington Spring fneetihg. He is still a good horse.

Out on His Own: The race War Buoy had on Saturday will do him good, and those he beat on Saturday will have little chance with him, next time out.

Village Guy: Finished fifth at Ashburton, and as the race is expected to improve him, he may be hard to beat, next time he faces the starter.

Consistent: Recess is one of the most consistent fillies in training, and she is quickly getting into good-class company.

Royal Again: Broke up badly in the Durbar Handicap at Ashburton. It seems to be a task to find a track that suits Royal Again. He is a moody customer.

Should Win Soon: Ptobationer ran a good honest race at Ashburton, and her winning turn may not be far off.

Will Come Right: Young Travis is only three years old, and may not have developed the stamina necessary to compete with success against the class of horse he is now set to meet, especially on a track like Ashburton, which demands staying powers.

Stanley Bingen! When Stanley Bingen breaks, it is very difficult to get him under control again. He went to a break near the finish of his race at Ashburton on Saturday, that carried him past the post in second place. He appeared to gain ground by his mistake.

Worthy Queen: Worthy Queen was distressed after her race on Saturday. A veterinary examination showed that she was suffering from kidney trouble, and was not in a condition to run her usual race.

Thrown ftbm Sulky: ' During the running of the Autumn 'Handicap, at Ashburton on Saturday, Winning Wave collided with another horse, and E. G. McDermott .was thrown from the sulky. He received a shaking, but was not hurt. Durbar Handicap Winner:

Impromptu was got by the freelegged pacer Pedro Pronto, from Petrova, by Peterbta from a General Lincoln mare, with the next dam by Young Irvington. There is something rather vague in the pedigree on the dam’s side, and the Stud Book is minus information about Pedro Pronto, who was got by Don Pronto.

Second, Interference: The fine of £lO imposed on M. B. Edwards, driver of War Buoy, for interference with Morello, at Ashburton, was the second occasion that Edwards has been fined £lO for interfering with A. Candy’s pacer, the former occasion being in the New Zealand Derby at Addington, last November.

A Fast Track: The weather was fine and the track was fast at the Ashburton meeting on Saturday and all the placed horses improved considerably on what they had been handicapped to do. All the races were over a mile and a-half, and the following table shows the winners, their handicap times, the time actually registered, and the improvement made: —

Galloping

MEETINGS TO COME.

April 19, 21—Whangarei. April 21.—Marton. April 21—South Canterbury. April 21, 23.—Nelson. April 27, 28.—Pabiatua. April 27, 28.— Marlborough. April 28— Amberley. May 2, 3.—Egmont. May 10, 12.— Wanganui. May 11, 12.—Southland.

Over Hurdles: Worship has been taken up again after a spell and will be tried over hurdles.

Rameses: The Sutala gelding Rameses has been sold at a hack price, and probably the last has been seen of him on a racecourse.

Has His Price: Rebel Star’s form has attracted offers, but so far the price has not been sufficiently attractive to lead to business.

Smart Hack: ■Dollar Prince has been doing well since he won at the C.J.C. meeting, and will be seen out at Timaru this week.

Davolo Ready: Davolo has been sharpened up by recent racing and galloped well last week. He will be an improved horse when next seen in public.

In Form: Shatter recorded a good gallop with Imperial Spear at Riccarton last week by covering six furlongs in Imin 13 4-ssecs. It was the best gallop of the morning.

Preparing for Winter: Aladdin is being treated to easy exercise to fine him down for more serious tasks. He is big and lusty in condition and hence a tax on his legs but hopes are entertained that he will stand another preparation.

Promising Hack: Lagoon’s form at Ellerslie and Avondale proves her to be one of the most promising hacks racing at the present time, and' it would not surprise to see her winning in open company later on.

Nearing Winning Form: Prolyxo is likely to be seen out at the Whangarei meeting, and if she retains her form she should be a payable proposition if that trip is undertaken.

King March: If this horse is capable of handling heavy going he should be a good winter proposition, for he has never been better than he is this season.

Impasto: There is no doubt regarding this gelding’s speed, and now that he is improving in stamina and racing more generously, further successes are likely to come his way before the season ends.

Spell for Grand Jury: When he contested the Easter Handicap on the second day of the Feilding Jockey Club’s recent meeting, Grand Jury was sporting silk for the last time during the present season, as he is now enjoying a well-earned rest on his owner’s farm.

Will Improve: Kelly has always sjiown abundance of speed on the track, but lack of experience was against him. Seeing he is by Kilbroney, he should do much better with age.

D’Artagnan Leased: M. Gorden Wyborn, of Mangaiti, who has leased his Musketoon gelding D’Artagnan to an Auckland sportsman, is handling a rising two-year-old half-sister to the chestnut by Te Monanui. She is well grown and shows quality.

On Easy List: Unoco is on the easy list just now and will probably be taken out of work during the winter. He is not big enough in conformation to cope with heavy weights on sodden tracks, but may again pay his way next summer.

Chatham for Stud: There is not much more racing in sight for Chatham, as Australia’s great miler is to be retired to the stud' in the spring. No decision has been made as to where he will begin his stud life. Several well-known breeders are anxious to secure him.

Leading* Horsemen: . L. J. Ellis, who intended riding at the Nelson and Marlborough meetings, has changed his plans, and will now be at Waimate and Washdyke. K. Voitre will be at the first-named fixtures.

Going South: It is the intention of the owners of Giggleswick, Gold Pit, Lady Rene and Knocklong, to take their horses to the Dunedin Club’s meeting, to be held ou June 2, 4 and 5. Under Treatment:

Lady Rene is suffering from soreness, and her owner, Mr. J. Darwell, had the well-known veterinary surgeon, Coloiftel Stafford, over from Christchurch yesterday, to examine her. Colonel Stafford also examined Copenna, who has developed a splint. Ho prescribed for both horses, and returned to Christchurch last evening. Copenna, who has developed a splint.

To Race at Nelson: West Coast gallopers that have accepted for, and are definitely making the trip to the Nelson Club’s meeting, are: —Haulbowline, Zetes, Bettwyscoed, Gold Arrow, Gold Sand, Coomassie, Arrowrose, Margaret Rose, Tentcall, Imasurvey, Mamoration, White Doe, Awamutu, Full Crop, Boooster and Battle Queen. It will make the strongest representation of West Coast horses at a Nelson meeting for many years. Australia’s Leading Sires:

Heroic is so far in front of all his rivals that he looks certain to finish at the head of the winning sires’ list in Australia this season. Windbag has greatly improved his position lately, mainly as a result of Chatham’s successes, and he seems well on the way to fill second place to Heroic, just as he did' last season.

Ran a Solid Race: Although beaten out of a place in the Autumn Handicap at Avondale, Werohia ran a sound race and was by no means disgraced. He covered a bit of extra ground rounding the home turn, otherwise he may have been closer up at the finish. Like the

majority of Greyspear’s stock, Werohia shows every indication of developing into a stayer, and as he is only a three-year-old his future prospects look exceptionally bright.

A Winning Ride: The success of A. E. Ellis in Sydney on Saturday will be a fitting wind-up to his first trip to Australia. This was his first win, but he narrowly missed capturing two important races, the Australian Cup. at Flemington, and' Doncaster Handicap at Randwick. Ellis will leave Sydney for home by this week’s steamer. Colenso, on whom Ellis won on Saturday, accompanied Golden Wings to Australia. He is trained at Hawera by W. Pine, and before leaving for Sydney ran a good second in a hack race at Hawera. FIELDS FOR NELSON NELSON, April 16.
