Mr and Mrs B. Wearn, of Auckland who have been visiting Greymouth, left on their return, by to-day’s express.

Mr. T. Smith, who has been appointed District Public Works Engineer for Westland, in succession to Mr. T. A. Johnston, will arrive to-day, from Wairoa.

A cablegram from Capetown stated that Senator F. S. Malan, formerly Minister of Mines, and leader of the South African Party, has been selected to represent the Union branch of the Empire Parliamentary Association at the Victorian centenary.

Among the guests at Bevington’s Hotel are: —Mrs A. H. Wall, Mr. F. W. Bostock, Mr. F. McGovern, Mr. E. W. Taylor (Christchurch); Mr. P. J. A Sydney cablegram recorded the death of Mr Packer, a well-known Australian journalist, formerly man-aging-editor of “Smith’s Weekly,” and of the “Daily Guardian,” and manag-ing-editor of Associated Newspapers, Ltd., until 1933. He then went to England, where he became ill. He underwent a major' operation and was returning to Sydney when he died. He was 55 years of age.

A British Official Wireless message stated that M. Doumergue and the members of the French Cabinet gave a luncheon at the Quai D’Orsay, in honour pf Lord Tyrrell, the retiring British Ambassador. All the Cabinet Ministers were present, and others included M. Beranger (President of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee) and M. Bastide, the President of the Chamber’ Foreign Affairs Committee).

A Press Association message from Wellington announced the death of Mr William Reeve Haselden, retired District Judge and Stipendiary Magistrate, aged 85 years. A son of the late Charles Haselden, deceased was. born in London, and came to New Zealand at the age of twelve years. He took a keen interest in defeice matters, being a captain for many years, and obtaining the long-service medal. He was the author of .several books. He leaves his widow and two sons.

Mr J. A. Hannah, the Wellington manager of the Union Bank, has, owing to continued ill-health, retired on pension. Mr Hannah, who joined the bank’s service at Ballarat in 1897, has served in every State in Australia as well as New Zealand. To succeed Mr Hannah at Wellington, the Bank has appointed Mr E. T. Porter, who has been manager at Dunedin for the past four years. Mr W. Morrison, present manager at Timaru, will succeed Mr Porter at Dunedin. Mr Morrison’s successor at Timaru will be Mr W. T. Irvine, the present Masterton manager. Mr J. G. S. S. Thompson, accountant at Gisborne, will be the new manager at Masterton. —Press Assn.

At Holy Trinity Church, Kumara, on Wednesday afternoon, the marriage was celebrated, the officiating clergyman being Rev. H. S. Hamilton, of Isobel Margaret, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles E. Evenden, to Albert Joseph, only son of Mr and Mrs Albert Fensom. The bride, who was escorted by her father, was attired in white satin, fully flared, on a tight-fitting bodice. Her long veil was relieved with orange blossoms, and she carried a bouquet of roses. The bride was attended by her sister. Grace, as bridesmaid, who wore blue elephant crepe, with hat to tone. Gracie 'George was flower girl, attired in pink satin. Mr Walker Evenden was best man. On their leaving the church, the “Wedding March” was played by the bride’s cousin, Miss F. Evenden, and the newly-married couple passed through a guard of Girl Guides. The reception was held at the residence of the bride’s parents.
