WHEN GHOST WALKS
AN EARLY MORNING SPECTRE Have you ever heard a ghost walking? Well, Mr. L. J. Dunnett, an undergraduate at University College, has, and that is why I came to Oxford to lay one of the strangest ghosts in the whole realm of the supernatural, writes Mr. William Blackley, in the “Sunday Chronicle.” It is no straightforward apparition that wails, howls, or rattles chains at you. It walks ... just walks. Heavy footfalls clump across the floor of a room between the kitchen and the chapel and a weird “presence” that is felt is enough to make one’s hair stand on end. With Mr. Dunnett I examined the strange ghost-chamber this afternoon and could find not the slightest trace of anything to account for the eerie noises which have created the liveliest interest throughout this university town.
“The funny thing about it,” said Mr. Dunnett, ‘‘is that this ghost only walks between 12.45 a.m. and 12. 55 a.m.
“At exactly 12.45 a. m. I heard a noise in my room sounding as though someone wearing heavy boots had begun to make his way between one corner of the room and the other. “All sorts of strange stories are being told in University College concerning the visitations. “One is to the effect that an undergraduate hanged himself in his rooms. “Is he now haunting the scenes of his former college- days or is it a completely strange ghost, seeking a. home? “Small parties of watchers have been sitting up at nights ready to record their impressions,” Mr. Dunnett told me, “But so far they have been unsuccessful.”
Someone put forward the theory that the noises might be caused by the weights in the clock tower near the room shifting. Experiments were carried out, but the investigators could trace no unusual noises from this source.
Meanwhile the ghost still walks. .. anti Oxford still talks.
