GISBORNE SAFE STOLEN OVER £2OO SECURED [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] GISBORNE, January 5. A heavy steel safe, containing £2BO in cash and cheques, with other valuables, was removed bodily from a cafe in Gladstone Road, occtipied by Theo. Nicholas, early this morning. Car tracks in the yard indicate the manner in which the safe was removed. Nicholas was in the shop till 1.15 a.m. The theft was discovered by an employee at 7 a.m. Nicholas had not banked the takings for a. fortnight. The safe contained £2OO in cash and £BO in cheques. also articles and money belonging to the staff, a collection of foreign coins, also the whole of Nicholas’s books and documents. It weighed three hundredweight, and would have been a heavy load for two strong men to carry from the front to the back shop. All the circumstances point to a carefully planned raid. AUCKLAND WINDOW ROBBED. JEWELLERY AND BANK NOTES. AUCKLAND, January 5. Jewellery and bank notes of the estimated value of £2OO were stolen in a daring manner from the window of a Queen Street shop, last evening, apparently in broad daylight. The window is the property of the Smelters’ and Refiners’ Company, whose shop is some feet to the rear, and separated from the window. Between 5.30 and 9 o’clock, ■when the caretaker discovered that the d<?or leading to the window had been broken open, thieves gained access, and stole old gold and jewellery, most of which could be easily melted down, and also Australian, Canadian and United States bank notes. It is believed that the theft took place before seven o’clock, and that' anyone who saw them in the window at that time would not suspect them of being thieves.
