Two minutes before he was due to be executed for murder, Joseph Breitenwciser’s death sentence was commuted to life-long imprisonment. Preitcnweiser was tried at a special court under the existing limited martial law, which requires execution within two hours of the passing of sentence. He was granted an extra hour, however, to enable counsel to prepare a petition to the President, whose reprieve arrived by telephone as Breitenwciser was. about to be led to the scaffold.
