To-day’s Racing News
Galloping MEETINGS TO COME. Dec. 11—Woodville. Dec. 16 —Hororata. Dec. 16 —Napier Park. Dec. 16 —Waipa. Dec. 26 —Poverty Bay. Dec. 26 —Waipukurau. Dec. 26, 27 —Westland. Dec. 26, 27 —Taranaki. Dec. 26, 27 —Dunedin. Dec. 26, 27, 29— Manawatu. Dec. 26, 28, Jan. 1,2, Auckland. Jan. I—Waikouati.1 —Waikouati. Jan. I—Wyndham. Jan. 1, 2—Greymouth. Jan. 1, 2—Hawke’s Bay. Jan. 1, 2 —Stratford. Jan. 1, 2 —Marton. Jan. 1, 2 —Wairarapa. Jan. 2 —Oamaru. Jan. 2, 3—Southland. Jan. 6, B—Reefton. Has Turn of Speed: Lady Zephyr is credited with running a good race at Ashffuj’ton after getting badly away. She has a good turn of speed, and may be seen out at the Dunedin Summer meeting.
Light Seale of Weights: The Wellington Cup winner, Royal Artist, is in the Auckland Cup with 7.1. He won at Trentham with 7.5 in 2.31 J, and the fact shows that a light scale of weights has been adopted in the Auckland Cup. Adding Co,st to Owners:
The South Canterbury Jockey Club has decided to increase the cost of racing to owners by splitting its available dates into three separate meetings. It has been found that Timarucan only stand up to one day’s racing in any week. c
Time and Weights: Sweet Agnes won the Oaks Stakes with 8.10 in 2min. 37sec. and scored a comfortable win. Nightly won the Canterbury Cup with 7.9 in 2min. 36 2-ssec. In the Hororata Cup, Nightly has to concede Sweet Agnes 21b over a mile and a-qqarter.
N.Z. Cup Winner: Palantua was brought to the Wingatui course on Wednesday morning, and has filled out in a pleasing manner during the holiday following her popular success in Mrs W. M'Kenzie’s colours in the New Zealand Cup. Palantua’s work consisted of a roll in the sand box. Small But Good: Gay Marigold is a good filly, and she is right at the top of her form just now. She is not very big, but is a generous galloper when at her best. Chief Clerk: Although beaten at Takapuna, Chief Clerk ran a creditable race. When the -country meetings are in full swing again, his prospects of winning races look exceptionally bright. First-class Jumper: Thespis is engaged in the hurdle race at Waipa, and if started it will be difficult to select one to beat hini. He is a first-class jumper, who should have a good future ahead when he commences to race over hurdles again. Solomon: Has had little racing this, season, and is not yet thoroughly wound up. With the speed that he posseses Solomon only needs to train on successfully, to prove hard to beat in future hack sprint events. An Improved Hack: One of the most improved, hacks seen out at the Takapuna meeting was Sinking Fund, who proved equal. to winning the open sprint on the' final day. He is now far more solid than ever he has been. Sinking Fund should not take long to win his way out of hack class. A Dual Winner: Consistency was a feature of Prolyxo’s form at Takapuna. The sister to Ammon Ra won both races that she contested. As she has now won over nine furlongs, an extra furlong or two should not trouble her now that she has struck her true form. Has Good Prospects: As she was staying on solidly in each of her races at Takapuna, Courthaven should be a good prospect in middle-distance hack events from now on. Will Do Better: Mungatoon looks like turning out a useful middle-distance horse this season, and it would not surprise to see him winning some of the cups on the country circuit, for he will improve. A Smart Filly: Bell Kyrian has made a most promising start with the colours up and should improve considerably with experience. She is a full-sister to Vallar, who some seasons ago, . when trained by the late J. Williamson, showed no end of speed, and was eventually taken to' Sydney, where she has since won.
An Unlucky Runner: Greek Gold was unlucky on both days at Takapuna, and with anything like a decent run over the concluding stages, would at least have won one event. On the concluding day he got into most of the trouble, Sinking Fund beating him by half a head. Getting More Solid: Gay Blonde has only to go on the right way between now and Christmas to win a good race at Ellerslie, for she stayed on well in her second effort at Takapuna. Feeling the Strain: Paganelli is getting on in years, and his legs are apparently beginning to feel the strain. In consequence he cannot handle his big loads like he used to. Railway Handicap Candidate: Bambury has only had a couple of races this season, winning at Waikato, and being third at Takapuna. He has 8.0 in the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie, and he is a very likely sort if started in that event. To Remain at Ellerslie: The Gisborne horses Sunny Sky, Sunny Bachelor, and Merry Damon, who were racing at the Takapuna meeting, will remain at Ellerslie for some time. They are in. the pink of condition, and a few races are likely to come their way during the approaching carnival. Went Off His Feed: Rereatu boat Jonathan by a head in the Takapuna Plate. On the strength of that running Jonathan was well supported for the Pupuke Plate on Monday, but it is stated he did not feed well in th meantime ,and in consequence made a poor showing.
Hurlingham’s Task: When Silver Streak won the Stewards’ Handicap he was getting 71b from Hurlingham, who did not finish in the first seven or eight. Tn the Members’ Handicap, won by Hurlingham, 7-S, he was getting 71b from Silver Streak, who finished fourth, after getting a. bad passage. In the seven-furlong race on the Hororata programme Hurlingham 9.11 and Silver Streak 9.5, or a difference of 131 b at a high scale of weights, which accentuates the task of the top weight.
Great Northern Derby: Sea Fox’s two races at Feilding were very satisfactory efforts in view of Auckland, and he will keep his Ellerslie engagements. Sea Fox is a Great Northern Derby candidate, and on the way he finished on at the end of his races in smart company last week, he is not to be despised for the New Year’s Day classic, with due regard to the form of Nightly and Red Manfred. The Auckland Derby, in fact, looks like being a better contest than the New Zealand Derby, for besides the colts and geldings, the two fillies, Gay Sheila and Golden Hair, will be runners.
£lO,OOO or £20,000 Cup? According to the Sydney writer C. J. Graves, there is a possibility of the Centenary Melbourne Cup, to be run next November, being worth much more than the £lO,OOO and trophy already announced. Mr. L. K. S. Mackinnon (the V.R.C. chairman) and his committee would like to make it £20,000. Revenue from four good days at the recent spring meeting may help even to this unapproached Australian stake, and who will say that further success at the summer and autumn meetings at Victoria headquarters will not prove the deciding factor in urging the V.R.C. executive to this ambitious flight?
