SWIMMING
GREYMOUTH CLUB’S REPORT. The annual report of the President, to be presented at the annual meeting of the Greyinouth Amateur Swimming Club to-morrow (Friday) is as follows: — It is with much pleasure that your Committee places before you a record of the Club’s activities in the past season of 1932-33. The season was a notable one in so far as swimming was concerned, the Club succeeding in winning the coveted John Burns Cup from Westport, and defending it against challenges by the Reefton and Cobden Clubs, thus remaining holders for the season. The gold medals, presented by John Burns and Co., in connection with the contest for their Cup, were 1 won by members of the Greymouth Club’s team, namely, A. Vincent, H. O’Leary, K. Griffen, W. O’Leary and B. Casey. The Club membership roll numbers 70, an increase of thirty members on last year’s total. Thanks to the solid support of the general public, the finaces of the Club are in a very healthy condition. Four carnivals were held during the year, and all were successful, both financialy and from the competitors’ point of view. Teams were sent during the season to Ross, Blackball and Reefton, and met with some measure of success. The West Coast Championships were held at Greymouth, at which a number of the Club’s members were successful, Mr. K. Griffen winning the 50 yards senior championship, Mr. W. O’Leary the 100 yards intermediate championship, while Mr. W. Payne carried off the honours in the 150 yards breaststroke championship. Among the ladies, Miss L. Galbraith won both the 50 and 100 yards chainships, while Master P. Ryan was the winner of the boys diving championship. The Ladies Cups, presented by the former Greyinouth Lad_ies’ Swimming Club, now defunct, were placed in competition for the first time. Miss V. Daly winning the Senior Cup and Miss P. Barlow the Junior Cup. During the season, a number of our members showed a marked improvement, in the men’s section notably AV. O’Leary. A. Vincent, H. O’Leary and G. Prime. The standard of the ladies’ swimming advanced considerably among all competitors, while in the l;oys.’ section. I>. Rose, P. Ryan, R. Davies and P- Smythe showed promise During the season the Club purchased a com [del e set of waterpolo cquipoient, and it is hoped during the coming season to make this fascinating sport a. feature at carnivals. The Club desires to thank once -r’ain Mr E. McDonnell for his interest and assistance. Mr. W. Gieseking, the Centre handicaper, who acted as -•tarter and handicapper at all our carnivals, and also all those gentlemen who kindly gave their services as oiiv cials We appreciate greatly the assistance rendered us by the Municipal Band and by the Press in the fauhtul record of our activities throughout, the season. In conclusion, we can look forward, weather permitting, to a most successful season. ______
