Mrs Harriet Heron, who has died at Roxburgh at the age of ninety-seven, was the first woman to camp in Gabriel’s Gully, when the famous gold rush set. in. She arrived in New Zealand in 1858, and, when storekeeping after the rush, had a visit from the infamous Maungatapu bushrangers, Burgess, Kelly, Levy, and Sullivan.

Whilst attending to his work as caretaker of the water-race at Springfield, Mr. A. Jones was savagely attacked by bees. He was badly stung about the head, and, finding no way of escape, jumped into the water-race. Here he was swept off his feet and with difficulty reached the bank. He was taken home in an exhausted condition.

A Well-dressed man, identified as John McClean, 55, seaman, married, was found in the Lyttelton tunnel, with a severely injured head, last evening. He was admitted to the hospital. His condition is improving. He came from Greymouth a few days ago. He is believed to have fallen from a train. —Press Assn.

An unusual point of view was presented by the defendant to a charge of having an unlicensed radio set, when the case came before Mr. Barton S.M. at Lower Hutt, to-day. Defendant wrote a letter, and the Magistrate, after reading it, said the charge was regarded by defendant as a summons for the recovery of debt. Persons were required to obtain licenses before sets w r ere operating. Imposing a fine of £l, Mr. Barton asked for publication of the facts of the case.—Press Assn.

The Auckland Education Board decided to restore the last salary cut imposed on the office staff, namely 10 per cent for seniors, and five per cent, for juniors. The Chairman said that the Board had been influenced by the staff’s efficiency, by comparison of salaries with those paid by smaller boards, and by the fact that reorganisation had increased the work of the staff, while resulting in.such a saving, that the cut could be restored. The salaries are still subject to the original ten per cent. cut. —Press Assn.

The opinion that all trampers should join properly constituted clubs, in order to be trained in mountain and bush craft by experienced enthusiasts, was expressed by Mr. J. A. Baine, Hon. Forest Ranger, appointed by the Commissioner of State Forests, in giving his views as an expert at the inquest, to-day, at Wellington, into the death of Patrick Alexander Devon, svho lost his life as the result of a fall on the Orongorongo Hills on Sunday, October 22. The Coroner (Mr. Gil-, bertson) gave a verdict of accidental dearth. He said there was nb question that it was purely an accident. There was no evidence that the boy was careless in any way, or was undertaking undue risks. —Press Assn.

A Vancouver cablegram, received today, stated that with fifty national experts, cheering as at a football game, a white leghorn hen, Doreen, owned by Mr. B. Rutledge, yesterday laid her 357th egg in 365 days, to equal the world record. The hen weighs four pounds, and her year's eggs 441 pounds.

In ideal weather conditions, Messrs J. W. Hannan and J. A. Hart, of Greymouth, and Mr. and Mrs. J. Trengrove, of Dunedin, made an aerial trip from Hokitika to South Westland yesterday afternoon. Messrs Hannan and Hart travelled in the West Coast Airways plane, piloted by Mr. A. H. Nancekivell, and Mr. and Mrs. Trengrove in a N.Z. Airways plane, piloted by Squadron-Leader White, of Timaru. The planes circled Mount Cook, and flew over the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, landing at Waiho for refreshments, and returning to Hokitika at about 6.30 o’clock last evening. The view secured, was described by the passengers as magnificent.

The notification of two cases of tetanus in the Canterbury Health District is a feature of the report for the week ended noon on Monday. Dr T. Fletcher Telford, Medical Officer of Health, in reply to a .reporter’s enquiry, said that, it was only an accidental circumstance ' that, the two cases were reported in one week. They were not from the same locality. The cases of infectious and othei notifiable diseases reported in the Canterbury and West Coast Health Districts numbered 13, an increase of two compared with the previous week. Canterbury: Scarlet fever, one; diphtheria, one; tuberculosis, three; erysipelas one; tetanus, two; puerperal fever (not ordinary) one; hydatids, one. West Coast: Tuberculosis, one; erysipelas, two.
