VICTORIA COLLEGE

REPLY TO CRITICISM. [PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, October 31. Recently, a controversy arose in Wellington as to the administration of Victoria University College, in which it was suggested by some critics that influences were at work at the College subversive of religion, morality and patriotism, and that those influences were operating through subjects discussed by various clubs and societies within the coilege, and through outsiders invited to take part in those discussions, and that the College authorities failed to check such influences.

Following a report by the .Professorial Board, the College Council made careful inquiry into the conditions in the College regarding college clubs, subjects discussed, persons invited to address clu,bs, and discipline and control. The Board’s finding may be summed up as follows:—The very small number whose conduct and beliefs ar<> in conflict with the great majority of l ho community aftiads attention entirely cut of proportion to its influence in the College. Such influences must and will be restrained' within reasonable bounds. The public can rest assured that the College spirit is on the whole good, and that the great majority of the students live an active i noimal life, and deserve to stand well i in the estimation, not. only of the teachers and Council, Ijjut of ■' Hie public. 'llm Council report adds: It feels it. should not. conclude Ute report without reatlirming the confidence already expressed in the professors and’ lecturers at the College, who, it is satisfied, are faithfully serving the College and the community.
