STRIKERS RAID FACTORIES
WANTON DAMAGE CAUSED

(Received October 31, 1 p.m.) NEW YORK, October 30. At Detroit, rioters, said by the . police to number 2500, to-day raided 'even plants, where tool diemakers were on strike. They smashed hundreds of windows, burned blueprints, overturned automobiles, and eluded the police by quickly dispersing, before more than six arrests could be made. . Shots were fired by the manager of one of the raided plants. No one was wounded, however. The demonstrators sped through the city in hundreds of automobiles with police cars trailing closely. The speedy movement from one factory to another, where the damage was done, made arrests difficult. LIQUOR LAUNCH SUNK.
NEW YORK, October 30.
At New London (Connecticut) a running battle between a Coast Guard cutter and an alleged rum runner, the launch Frances of Newport, in which machine gun bullets and one pounder shells were exchanged, reached a spectacular climax, to-day, wfien the Frances, ploughing through her own smoke screen, rammed the patrol boat and sank. Four men. comprising the Frances’s crew, were taken prisoners, one of whom is in a critical condition from gunshot wounds in the abdomen. The Coast Guard vessel had to be beached, with a badly stove bow. A cargo of 500 cases of liquor sank with the Frances.

“If you are being chiselled by the man who sells you a toothbrush, the Government will step in and protect your rights,” sajid the President’s Secretary, Mr Howe, in a broadcast speech. “You may get a blank form at your local post office, on which you can write, ‘I wont to such and such a store, where they charged me sixty cents for a toothbrush, which last week cost me only fifty cents. Please investigate.’ If you do this, your complaint will be pursued through the wholesaler and the manufacturer. If the reason for the rise is not a good one, the chiseller will face the N.R.A. Court.”
