WOOL MARKETS

LONDON, October 29.

Mr Devereux reports: In sympathy with the firmer tendency overseas, the markets for fine wools have rather appreciated in price, but low quotations from South America for coarse crossbreds have been a somewhat disturbing influence on these descriptions. There is a sound tone at Bradford Merino topmakers again advanced in prices. Spinners are reluctant to follow, but a satisfactory amount of new business has been transacted. Fine crossbred tops advanced, and business was transacted at a higher level. Medium low crossbred top improved, but not much new business. There is increased activity in German markets. The sales of tops has substantially increased in volume. Continental futures markets, are fairly active.

MINING RETURNS.

LAWSON’S FLAT.

Tho mine manager reports that the wash-up tor the two weeks ending October 26. produced 49 ounces of retorted gold. Approximately 6300 yards were sluiced, the yardage being restricted pending the installation of further plant, which the proposed issue of preference shares is intended to provide.

CHARLESTON SLUICING COMPANY

The secretary of the Charleston Sluicing Company reports that the wash-up for 26 shifts from October 7 to October 21, was 151 ounces. BRIAN BORU. The Brian Born dredge return for last week, was 53 ounces 14 dwts, for 102 hours’ working.

FRESHFORD.

INVERCARGILL, October 27. The Freshford Dredging Company’s return for the week was 12oz.

GOLDFIELDS DREDGING.

DUNEDIN, October 27.

The Goldfields Dredging Company’s return for the week ended to-day was Soz. for 118 hours. The dredge is still unavoidably working through old tailings, but solid ground will be reached shortly, OKARITO RETURN. DUNEDIN, October 30. The Okarito return comprises 33ozs 7dwts, for 113 hours’ dredging.

WILTON COLLIERIES.

[SPECIAL TO “STAR.”]

AUCKLAND, October 30

A circular has been issued to the

sharebrokers of Wilton Collieries Limited asking them to subscribe £20,000 in preference capital to enable the company to continue operations. ’rhe circular announces that negotiations with Renown Collieries Ltd., for amalgamation have failed, and that the two companies are again

operating as separate entities. The directors express confidence that with additional capital, the company can carry on. fi'hey propose to issue 25,000 £1 preference shares, bearing n. cumulative preference dividend of 6 per cent. Each of the directors promised to subscribe for 500 shares, no allottment will be made unless a total of 20,000 shares is applied for. An interim dividend of lid a share lias been declared by directors of Bycroft Limited, flourmillers, Auckland. This is at the usual rate. Payment will be made on November 15.
