ARABS AND JEWS

RIOTS IN PALESTINE

MANY CASUALTIES

[BRITISH OFFICIAL WIRELESS.]

RUGBY, October 27. Rioting occurred in Jaffa this, afternoon.

A communique issued by the High Commissioner for Palestine states that the Arab Executive Committee announced its intention to hold on October 27 a political demonstration at Jaffa similar to that which was not. allowed at Jerusalem on October 13.

The High Commissioner received the president and members- of the Arab Executive on October 25 and informed them that no political procession or demonstration would be allowed at Jaffa, but that the members of the Executive would be permitted to proceed to the District Office and there hand their protest or manifesto to the District Commissioner for transmission to his Excellency.

Despite the High Commissioner’s prohibition a procession formed to-day in the neighbourhood of the Government Office at Jaffa. It began to move and was ordered to disperse. This injunction was disobeyed and the police were assaulted. The police were compelled to make a baton charge to disperse the mob, which, however, reformed again and attacked the police. By two o’clock the rioters were dispersed and quiet was restored. One member of the police force and three rioters were killed, and seven rioters are reported to have been killed. Two police and twenty rioters suffered serious injuries. A large number of arrests were made.

There is complete quiet s throughout Palestine with the exception of Jaffa.

’PLANES FROM EGYPT.

LONDON, October 29.

A Jaffa message states that 20 of the Arabs were killed there yesterday. It is also stated that trouble developed in several other parts of Palestine. A crowd demonstrated at the railway station at Haifa. They were trying to smash motor cars when the police were compelled to fire, wounding several. Several police were stabbed.

The British Air Force have rushed a squadron of aeroplanes from Egypt to Palestine.

STRIKE AT JERUSALEM.

JERUSALEM, October 29

The Palestine Arabic unrest continues. It may spread to trans-Jor-dania, -where precautionary measures are being taken by the authorities at Haifa.

The police have arrested the members of the Arab Executive at Jaffa, including a prominent lawyer. Sullen mobs of Arabs watched the funerals yesterday of those who -were killed in the recent disturbances, but there was no disorder. The Arabs have begun a general strike in Jerusalem. WORKING UP EXCITEMENT. (Recd. October 30, 1 p.m.) LONDON, October 30. The “Dispatch’s” special correspondent at Jerusalem says: Aeroplanes are circling overhead as I telephone. Armed cars patrol the streets. Arab leaders are pouring into Haifa. Military authorities are prepared for the gravest eventualities. The situation is tense in several towns. Rioting is spreading. The Jews, becoming terrified, are. remaining in their houses.

MORE MOB ATTACKS.

(Recd. October 30, 2 p.m.) JERUSALEM, October 29.

Baton charges dispersed a fresh attempt to penetrate a police cordon by rioters. Home made bombs exploded harmlessly. Stones were thrown and sticks used compelling the British noncommissioned officer to fire a few shots. Two rioters were killed and fifteen were taken to the hospital. Veiled women, screaming from the housetops incited the mob. The whole city is filled with excited Arabs, eager to demonstrate. They compelled Jewish shops to close in the main street, and smashed one Jewish establishment. They compelled one British shop to put up its shutters.

Members of the Arab executive were arrested. Others protested against the police firing at Jaffa and demanded the release of the leaders. It was decided to protest to the Arab King, and the League of Nations. Arab shopkeepers and motorbus owners continue to strike.

A flight of aeroplanes is parked at Cairo in readiness for any emergency, but thus far is not required. The police fully control the situation. Curfew is effective at nightfall. The Jaffa trouble is apparently quelled. All the Arab papers qre suspended in Damascus.

S. AFRICAN CAMPAIGN.

CAPE TOWN, October 28.

A sponsored by Germans anti-Jew-ish movement has been launched by the Nationalist Socialist organisation. Rabbi Bender disclosed the extent of the campaign, insulting printed slips being pasted in library books and on seats of railway carriages, doors and shop windows, while swastikas, skull, and crossbones are pasted on Jewish houses. The’Rabbi alleges that the killing of Jews was advocated at a private meeting, and the Jews fear that the unemployed will be misled into resorting to extreme measures. The Rabbi urges that the campaign be declared illegal.
