SWEPT OFF ROCK
AUCKLAND FISHING TRAGEDY
[PEG PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
AUCKLAND, October 1G
Swept off a rock by a huge wave, two people lost their lives at dusk on Saturday, at Cape Maria. Van Diemen Lighthouse. They were Mrs. Minnie Elizabeth Newson, wife of one of the assistant lightkeepers, and Frederick Gaze, second assistant keeper. They were fishing from rocks with Mr. Newson. High seas had been running for several days and cross currents in the narrow channel, separating the island in which the lighthouse stands from the mainland, tended to make the waves vary greatly in size.
Newson eventually succeeded in recovering his wife's body, but though artificial respiration was continued for two hours, it was of no avail. Settlers are searching for Gaze’s body. The Coroner and a. police constable will go north, to-day, and if it is possible to reach the island, will conduct an inquest. Others on the island are F. Young, head-keeper, and the Newsons’ two young children. Mrs. Newson was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Oden of Tawa Road, Onehunga.
