FIELDS FOR AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, October 13. The Auckland Trotting Club’s acceptances for the first day, October 21, are: —

TROTTING AT GREYMOUTH.

SPRING MEETING APPROACHING

With acceptances due to-morrow night, interest in the Spring meeting of the Greymouth Trotting Club is now being shown by the public. In these days, when the framing of handicaps is purely mechanical, defections from the nomination list are exceedingly small. Owners know the mark that each horse will be placed on, and they also know which horses are eligible, and what company their own horses are likely to meet. If the existing system of handicapping has not been viewed with favour by all interested in the light-harness sport, it has certainly been beneficial to owners in that it does not necessitate them expending a nomination fee to find at what mark the handicapper will assess any horse. This means that a horse nominated, can, in nearly every case, be regarded as a starter. The entries for the Greymouth Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday and Monday next, are not as large as those of past years, but that fact will be welcomed by the general public. From the betting-man’s point of view, a handy-sized field is preferable to a large number of starters. Seven is considered the most popular number of starters with the people, and as the races now stand, there should be at least seven starters in each. Tn

the majority of cases where there is a large field, many of the runners do not hold a winning chance, and usually manage to provide a hindrance, to the prospects of others. Where the Greymouth Club has been fortunate with the approaching meeting, is in the class of horse that has been entered. Most of them are well-known performers, and the public will have an advantage by not having to “shoot in the dark,” when making selections. No field equal to that now standing in the two fast-class races, has previously been brought together at Greymouth. The presence of eight of the best in the Dominion is alone sufficient inducement for the public to patronise the meeting. The two races will provide miniature New Zealand Cup contests. Everything has been placed in order at Victoria Park, where caretaker Watson has the track and appointments in excellent condition. The meeting should number among the successes of the Club. Public patronage is deserving, for the reason that it has evei- been the aim of the Club to bring the best horses in their class to Greymouth, and thereby provide the people with racing much above the ordinary standard. Acceptances close to-morrow night, at 9 o'clock, with the Secretary (Mr. P. C. Heaphy), Mackay Street, Greymouth.
