CHRISTCHURCH, October 15

In the round-the-gorges cycle race, 100 miles, yesterday, F. J. Grose got fastest time. The results were: —- E. Jones, Christchurch (handicap 35 min.), riding time shr Tmin llsec., 1: R. W. Marks. I’apanui (35min.), shr 7min 11 l-ssec, 2: L. Fever, ~ New Brighton (2Smin), shr Omin 11 2-5 sec., 3. Grose’s time was 4hr 33min 12sec, off scratch. In the 15 mile race of I’aparua Club, \V. Guy (2min.) 39min 36sec., won; next being S. North (2 Amin). lOmin, 6 l-ssec; H.'Hobson ilimiu)’, 39min 37 l-ssec.

50 MILES CHAMPIONSHIP

NEW PLYMOUTH, October 15 The North Island fifty miles road cycPing championship was won by R. Yardley (New Plymouth), in a race to Pungarehu and back. There were twenty-six competitors. L. Heatley (Urenui) was first home, but Yardley’s was the fastest time, 2hrs 2min 53 l-ssec.

AUCKLAND RACE.

AUCKLAND, October 15

The North Island professional championship cycling race from Cambridge to Papakura. resulted in a win for W. Hills (Auckland), on a handicap of 39mins, his riding time being 4hrs 3min 31secs. Other placings were: W. Hansen, Whakatane (14 mins), 3hrs 40min 6sec., 2; G. Green, Whakatane (26min.), 3hrs 52min 7scc, 3; H. Lewis, Waharoa (36min), 41ns 6min 31sec., 4. Fastest time was gained by A. Ralston (Otago), off scratch, viz 3hrs 24mins 20secs. The latter established a new- record. The previous record was 3hrs 49mins 57 1-5 secs., established by W. Harcourt in 1929.

AUSTRALIAN CONTESTS

MELBOURNE, October 15

The cycling road race, Warrnambool to Melbourne, over IGS miles, yesterday, provided the- most exciting finish in. the history of (he race. Willoughby beat King by inches, with Anderson, half a. wheel away third. Fastest lime was secured by the unplaced rider, W. F. Stuart, from scratch, 6 hours 27 minutes 56 secs. Opperman had puncture, but then put up second fastest time. There were 232 riding in the event. E. Milliken, the brilliant amateur cyclist, recorded the fastest time in the Colac to Melbourne road race over a hundred miles course, namely, 3 hours, 51 minutes 44 seconds.
