TRAINS COLLIDE. BRISBANE, October 13.

The Brisbane mail train to Townsville collided with a stationary goods train fifty-six miles north of Brisbane, and caused severe damage to both trains, but the passengers in the mail train escaped with minor injuries and shock.

THEFT CHARGE. SYDNEY, October 13.

Horace John Algar, aged 42, company manager, was charged at the Central Court with stealing £143 3s 6d from Raymond Swanger and others at Wellington. Algar was arrested aboard the Wanganella.' The Court made an order that defendant be handed over to custody for his return to. New Zealand.

MEAT WORKS DISPUTE. MELBOURNE, September 13.

Tho slaughtermen’s strike at the export meatworks is b’elieved to be approaching a settlement. The Trades Hall Disputes Committee, on behalf of the strikers, made overtures to the employers’ representatives for a. conference, which is now under consideration.

SERVICE CAR ABLAZE,

MELBOURNE, October 13.

A service car containing thirteen women passengers, mostly for Canberra, struck a concrete culvert near Wallan and overturned, and caught fire. All of the passengers, however, were extricated before the flames reached them.

Eight of the women were injured, the majority having broken bones. The remainder were all severely shaken,

bile the driver sustained' facial injuries. The accident was due to the bursting of 0 tyre, causing the vehicle to swerve and strike the culvert with terrific force. ’
