PERSONAL NOTES

The King and Queen arrived at London, by special train from Scotland on Friday morning. Their Majesties looked remarkably well, they having enjoyed exceptionally fine weather during their stay at Balmoral Castle. They will stay at Buckingham Palace for a few days, before leaving on a short visit to Sandringham.—Official Wireless.

Aiderman Sir Charles Collett has been elected Lord Mayor of London.

Mr J. Cunliffe returned on Saturday, from Christchurch.

Messrs F. and M. Kennedy arrived on Saturday, from Wellington.

Mr A. Donnellan returned on Saturday, from a visit to Christchurch.

Mr G. Groom has been elected President of the West Coast Old Boys’ Assn.

Mesdames A. J. McDowall and S. Trotter returned on Saturday from a holiday visit to Wellington.

Archbishop Redwood returned to Wellington to-day; by the Makura, after spending the winter months at Brisbane. —Press Assn.

The death occurred yesterday at his home near Huntly, of Terata Mahuta Te - Wherowhero, the fourth of the line of the Maori Kings, which was set up in 1858. —Press Assn.

The Rev. D. D. Rodger, formerly of the Waikari and Papanui Presbyterian churches, died on Saturday ■iu Auckland at the age of. 77. He suffered from a slight illness about a fortnight ago, and had apparently recovered, but died suddenly.

The death is announced from London of Earl Ranfurly. He was bora in 1856, and was educated at Harrow and Cambridge. From 1897 to 1904, he was Governor of New Zealand. His name is commemorated by the Ranfurly Shield.

Messrs J. Mulcare, J. B. Kent, A. J. McDowall, and Sinclair Trotter, of the Grey Electric Power Board, returned from Wellington on Saturday, where they attended the annual conference of the Power Boards’ Association.

Mr R. A. Frost, of the staff of the Union Bank, has received notice of his transfer to Oamaru, and will leave on Thursday on annual leave and thence to Oamaru. Mi’ E. Price, of the Nelson branch of. the Bank has been transferred to Greymouth, and will commence duty to-morrow.

The death took place at the Grey River Hospital this morning of Charles Lugar Johnston, aged seventeen years. Deceased, who had been in bad health for some years, was the son of Abraham and the late> Mrs Johnston of Rotomariu, - and is survived by three sisters. The funeral takes place on. Wednesday.

Bishop Brodie will arrive from Christchurch to-day, accompanied by Dean O’Donnell (Ashburton), Fathers T. Hanrahan (Riccarton), Fogarty (Darfield) and Lordan (Sumner), who will attend the funeral of the late James Kennedy, which will take place to-morrow at 10 a.m., following Pontifical Requiem Mass at St. Patrick’s Church.- Tributes were paid at St. Patrick’s Church, yesterday, by Father Long, to the deceased as a Catholic and as a citizen. The King has approved that Sir Frank Boyd Merriman, the SolicitorGeneral, be appointed President of the Probate, Divorce, and Admiralty Division of the High Court, in place of Lord Merrivale, who has resigned, and also that Mr Donald Somerville, M.P., be appointed Solicitor-General in succession to Sir F. Merriman, and that the honour of knighthood be conferred upon Mr Somerville, on his appointment.—Official Wireless.

Dr. Paul Fogarty, a son of Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Fogarty, .pf Greymouth, passed, last week, an examination, in Edinburgh, which entitles him to' a Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons. Dr. Fogarty .received his early education at the Greymouth Marist Brothers’ School. He proceeded then to the Sacred Heart College, Auckland, where he gained many honours before entering Otago University, where he gained his M.D.

The death took place at Hukarere yesterday afternoon of Mr John Allan Pugh, at the age of seventy years. Deceased, who was employed as a roadman by the Public Works Department, lived in a hut near the main road, and had been in apparent good health, and his collapse while making his bed yesterday, was unexpected. Deceased was a native of Otago, and had been engaged as a roadman at Hukarere for the past'six years, and was formerly a member of the Greymouth Waterside Workers’ Union. He is survived by his wife, Mrs Amelia Pugh, of Puketahi Street, Greymouth, and three sons, Harry (Palmerston North), Allan (Otira), and Robert (Greymouth), and five daughters, Mesdames J. B. Kent (Greymouth), J. Coulson (Hokitika), F. Dumelow (Dobson), C. Nightingale (Hokitika), and P. Arthur (Christchurch). There are also twenty-six grand-children. Mr Pugh was predeceased by his mother some eighteen months ago.
