WEST INDIES OUTPLAYED
WEAK BATTING PERFORMANCE
MARRIOTT BOWLS WELL [BY CABLE —PBESS ASSX. —COPYBIGHT.] (Received August 15, 10.30 a.m.) 3 LONDON, August 14. , Twelve thousand people saw the West Indies’ utter collapse on a wic- > ket apparently tricky from overnight , dampness. ■ Clark and Nichols made the ball , bump awkwardly. Headley was struck four times, on the body, and 1 Barrow was also hit on the arm. • Clark secured the first three wic- ’ kets, two of which were the results of 1 catches at forward shortleg by Bakewell, who stood almost at the end of the bat. Marriott, whose peculiar medium paced delivery, conceals' a break, cleverly accounted for Headley, and the tail-enders showed no capacity to deal with him. The West Indies’ first innings ended in under two hours. Following on, Roach and Barrow scored rapidly off the- fast - bowlers. The first wicket fell at 77, blit when Headey again failed to get going, the bowlers had the upper hand. At one stage only eight runs were added in halt’ an hour. The close ..came .with 22 runs needed Io .save the innings defeat. The scores are: — ENGLAND —First Innings 312. WEST INDIES—First Innings.
