RUGBY FOOTBALL

CANTERBURY LOSE AGAIN.

[PEB PRESB ASSOCIATION.]

PALMERSTON N„ August 9

Manawatu to-day defeated Canterbury by 11 points to 8. Early in the game Manawatu were twice penalised. Dunshea failing with kicks full of possibilities. McKay was soon after given a chance to open Manawatu’s account with a penalty, but the ball struck the bar. A second effort shortly after went wide. The first try came for Manawatu, when Metcalf sent his backs away from a scrum. H. Ormond short punted and Bramwell bustled the Canterbury full-back, and in a race over the line, Eade won. H. Almond converted. Hazelhurst had a shot from a penalty for Canterbury, failing in front of the posts. Manawatu scored their second, a magnificent try, when Mitchell tore his way through the Can- ■ terbury pack and passed to Strange. . who went within five yards of the line, where, from a scramble, Waldin sent . the whole back line away, to finish off the movement himself. H. Ormond missed the kick. Manawatu were right down on the Canterbury line, when half time came with the score: Manawatu 8, Canterbury nil. Manawatu’s superiority in the first spell was undoubtedly due to the bustling tactics of the forwards, though the backs handled well, making the best use of opportunities. In the second spell, Canterbury faced the sun. McKay made an attempt with a field goal, but failed owing to the ball not rising sufficiently. Canterbury had a chance of opening their account with a free kick right under the posts, but were disappointed when Hazelhurst failed. Canterbury made a number of slashing attacks at this stage of the game, but Manawatu were tackling deadly. Play swung between Manawatu"line and the 25 for fully a quarter of an hour, before Cooper eased the situation by finding the line to half way. This relief was not for long, however. The Canterbury i backs were again racing down, to be pushed out at the corner. There followed a free kick, Hazelhurst raising the first points for Canterbury. Manawatu replied instantly with a try, McKenzie breaking out of a forward rally to send H. Ormond, Waldin and Elliott away, the latter scoring. The kick was wide. Pawson scored the first try for Canterbury as the result of a back line movement, Dunshea converting. When time was called, Manawatu were attacking. In the second spell, Canterbury backs gave a brilliant . display of their ability. They were 1 undoubtedly superior in their attacks, I the result of better scrummaging in E the second spell. The score was a ‘ good indication of the merits of the Jteams. SOUTHLAND v. MARLBOROUGH. INVERCARGILL, August 9. The . touring Marlborough Rugby j team were defeated by Southland by 25 points to 15, to-day, in a game that 1 was interesting only in the final half hour. Rugby Park was in good order and there was an excellent attendance. The forwards were evenly matched, but the visitors got most of the ball from the 'set scrums and line- c outs. Lack of finish lost them many t chances, and there were not ten points 0 between the teams. t

Southland gave a disappointing exhibition. Southland made all the early play, and after five minutes, from a loose rush. Metcalfe received and turned in. and ran round behind the posts. Sharp converted. Two minutes later, from a free t kick, Lane kicked a penalty, for the visitors. The visitors then hammered away, and were rewarded when Lane after a passing rush scored. The try was not converted. Southland were soon back on attack, and from a penalty Sharp goaled. Almost immediately after, from a scrum just outside their own 25, Southland heeled and Smith short punted and caught the ball on the full at half-way, and gave Geddes a clear field, the winger crossing wide out. The try was not converted. The game was fast, but there was not much good football. Southland were attacking and the ball came out to Mitchell, who potted, the ball striking the bar and going over. Southland led by 15 points to 6 at half time.

In the second spell, the visitors went on the offensive and from a scrum J. Tapley went over after a good dash. Phillips missed the kick. At half way Mitchell was given the ball and he outpaced pursuers to score behind the posts, aftei* a great run. Sharp goaled. The visitors then scored a well-deserved try, Casey going over after a dashing movement. Keeping it up, the visitors were rewarded when Dobson scored from a line out. Just on time Mitchell burst away from loose play and handed on to Donnelly, who made a long run and then passed to McKay, who scored for Southland under the posts. Sharp converted, making the final scores: Southland 25, Marlborough 15. SOUTH AFRICAN TEAM. (Recd. August 10, 1 p.m.) CAPE TOWN, August 10.
