BOGUS PHILANTHROPIST
FRAUD AT CHRISTCHURCH. [PEB PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, July 31. On a charge of theft, Henry William Charles McKay was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment. Accused, when arrested last week, was charged’ under the name of Josepth Gordon Lamb. He had been posing as a benefactor of the poor and needy. Police inquiries revealed that he was an habitual criminal who used several aliases. He is described as a labourer, aged 29. McKay was released on probation from the Auckland prison on April 6, and since April 14, when last reported, the police lost track of him. While staying at Warner’s Hotel, he was interviewed by detectives, who considered the explanation unsatisfactory and arrested him on a charge of obtaining credit by fraud. Subsequently they found he bad a quantity of stolen goods in his possession, and the owner so far is not traced. Terms of imprisonment were also imposed on a fraud charge, and a breach of probation.
