A change in the ownership of Nelson’s oldest mercantile firm, J. H. Cock and Co., established in 1842, is announced, the business passing into the hands of F. S. Johns (manager of the New Plymouth branch of the firm), Mr H. C. Bebarfald (manager of the Wanganui branch), and Mr E. H. Thomson (of the Nelson branch), who have acquired Mr H. Cock’s interest in the business. Mr Thomson is Chairman of Directors. Fie is also a director of the Anchor Shipping Foundry Company. All three new partners are old servants of the firm. At a valedictory gathering a presentation was made to Mr S. C. Cock, tributes being paid' to the cordial relations that had always existed between Mi’ Cock and the staff. Good wishes were extended for his happiness in retirement. Associated with the presentation was Mr Fred J. Johns, of Wellington, who joined the firm in 1879 in Mr H. C. Cock’s grandfather’s time. Mr Cock will retain his position as managing-director of the Anchor Shipping Foundry Company.
BELL HILL SLUICING. The Bell Hill Sluicing Claim finished their wash-up on Saturday, and report a return of 420 z. lOdwt for 100 hours’ sluicing. Advantage was taken of the rainfall during the month to break down the upper gravels, the gold from which is fine, but of good quality. Therefore, very little bottom was taken this working. BRIAN BORU GOLD DREDGING CO. Mr. E. Parfitt has resigned the secretaryship of the Brian Boru Gold Dredging Cov., and Mr. J. Martin Bunt. F.P.A.N.Z., F.1.A.N.Z., Greymonth has been appointed in his stead. Owing to a break in the top tumbler stacker of the dredge, there was no wash up this week-end. The dredge is working again, and it is expected that the usual wash up will take place at the end of this week. GOLDEN SANDS. CHRISTCHURCH, July 31.
