To-day’s Racing News

Galloping MEETINGS TO COME. July 22—South Canterbury. July 22—Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club. j u ly 29—Christchurch Hunt Club. July 27, 29—Gisborne. Gold Trail Returns: Gold Trail, who was brought in from her spell a short time ago, is not show ing the improvement expected. The filly is still suffering from a cough, which is causing, her trainer, J. M. Camerpn,- some anxiety. Chief Marionette Injured: The three-year-old filly Chief Marionette was kicked while at the post for the Whyte Handicap at Trentham on Tuesday, one of her tendons being so seriously injured that a long spell will be necessary. Pleasing Immensely: According to a private letter from Mr. C. C. Sheath, owner of Ammon Ra, that horse is pleasing immensely in his track work at Randwick, and he will probably have his first race about the middle of August.

Not Yet Decided: No decision has yet been reached whether Dole, winner of the Champion Two-year-old Plate at Trentham in March, will go to Australia to run in the Epsom and other spring handicaps. This rising three-year-old, unfortunately, has no classic engagements. He is progressing nicely in the prelim inary stages of Ms preparation at Trentham.

Engaged at Ellerslie: Princess Bede, who claims an engagement in the Parnell Handicap at Ellerslie next Saturday, is stated to be training on satisfactorily a,t Cambridge. It is some time since this mare won a race, but the fact that she is partial to soft going will be in her favour during the next month or two. She stays on better than most hacks,, and when she becomes solid again should pay her way where the com pany is not too select.

Making Good Headway: Since resuming work some weeks ago after a, short ■spell, Sunny Sky has done exceptionally well and is now putting plenty of dash into hei tasks. This mare comes on very fast when she starts to improve, and if she goes’ on as at present it will not be long before she is back to racing condition again. At her best Sunny Sky is capable of holding her own against the pick of our handicap horses.

First Lady Secretary: A Wellington Press Association telegram states that at a meeting of the Wellington Racing Club’s stewards on Saturday, Miss D. E. Bray, the Acting Secretary, was unanimously elected Secretary of the Club. She has thus the honour of being the first woman Racing Secretary in the Dominion’s history. Miss Bray is a former resident of Grey mouth, her father, Mr. W. Bray, having been an employee of Messrs C. Smith Ltd., Mawhera Quay.

Champion Jumper: Mosstrooper, the veteran Melbourne steeplechaser, who won at the V.A.T.C. meeting last Saturday, never won a race on the flat during the four and ahalf years he was kept in that department. Over jumps his winning stakes amount to more than £13,500.

WELLINGTON CONCLUDES. PADDON’S WINTER HURDLES. WELLINGTON, July 15. The Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting concluded at Trentham today, in wet weather, with the course in a sodden state. Repudiation led to the straight, where he was challenged by Hunting Lodge and Woodful. The latter finished best and won comfortably at the post.

NOTES ON THE RACING. NOVICE HURDLER AVINS. [SPECIAL TO “STAB.”] AVELLINGTON, July 15. The Talavera Hurdle Handicap resulted in a win for the Awapuni-owned Morrath, who was having her first race over battens, while her rider, W. J. McDowell, was also having his first hurdle mount. Morrath and Knollmere rushed away with a lead from the first fence, opening up a big gap to Ramuna, Knollmere hit the fence at the five furlong post, and dropped back. Ramuna ran up to Morrath, and in a struggling finish Morrath got home by half a length. Joie de Vai was a poor third, in front of Sir Musk and Huntly, who were well back. Park Acre fell at the first fence, and Currajong and Vitaphone at the third.

GRAND SCORE SURPRISES. Tavern Knight, one of the favourites for the Novice Handicap, broke through the barrier twice, but got awdy well, and was one of the pacemakers to the straight entrance. His nearest companions were Cyclonic and Grand Score. This trio contested the finish. Tavern Knight had a handy advantage up to within a hundred yards, but then commenced to weaken, and Grand Score, wide out, got up to beat him on the post. Cyclonic was a good third, clear of Heather Glow, who was followed by Korero, Mercian Prince and Epigram.

THRILLS IN STEEPLECHASE. The July Steeplechase provided plenty of thrills, five of the contestants being eliminated in the first round. Jen went out at the second obstacle, and Omeo slipped into the third and fell heavily. High Pitch then took charge, but crashed through tho fence at the mile post, and Billy Boy collided with him when landing from a faultless effort ovei' the fence. Ascervate also stopped, and dislodged bis rider. Copey was then left in charge, and he led Make Up by four lengths round the top, with a big gap ';o Callamart and Quinopal. Make Up made a. forward move half a mile .Tom home, and gradually overhauling Copey, was two lengths in front enterng the straight. The last fence had been flattened, and with his superior pace Make Up increased his advantage in the run home and won .by five lengths, while Copey was nearly double hat distance in front of Callamart. Quinopal was well back, with Kaokaoroa and Tunbridge tailed off.

FOREIGN QUEEN COLLECTS. Foreign Queen, from the inside berth, was first away in the Crofton Handicap, with Drum Fire, who started next to her, in close attendance. Foreign Queen was clear of Drum Fire, Royal Dash, Pango and Tea Garden entering the straight. Drum Fire momentarily closed on Foreign Queen when commencing the run home, but the latter was always going easy, and won without any pressure being applied. Drum Fire beat the third horse Pango even more easily. Shootist came from the back to get fourth place, and then came Tea Garden and High Speed.

PADDON WINS DECISIVELY. Paddon showed his class by his decisive victory in the Winter Hurdles Handicap. He certainly only had to beat two hacks in the run home, but the manner in which he accomplished the task suggests he is back to his best form especially on a soft track. Membo was eliminated early, falling at the second fence. Adventus, at this stage, was in charge from Hounslow, Paddon and Emancipation, and at the end of a circuit was well clear of Hounslow and Paddon, with Emancipation in front of Gold Knight and Pahu. Hounslow commenced to weaken six furlongs from home, and Adventus, steadied by three faulty jumps, was losing some of his advantage. Rounding the home turn Gold Knight here drew up to him, while Paddon also moved up, and there was not much between the trio at the last fence. Adventus was first (Tver, but was immediately tackled by Gold Knight, who, however, was in trouble at the distance. Paddon then put in his claim, and soon had the leader's measure, going on to heat him by two lengths. Gold Knight was three lengths back, well clear of Hounslow, with Emancipation and Pahu beaten off. » A BIG DIVIDEND. The result of the Winter Oats Handicap sprung a surprise on investors, Playground leading practically all the way and returning a. big price. Playground led into the straight, from All Humbug, Lady Spy and Water Power. The field was then well spread out. All Humbug tackled Playground at the distance and appeared likely to outstay him, but the latter hung on to win by over a length. Chang struggled on into third place, five lengths away, with another gap to Seatown, who was I

followed by AVater Power, Little Doubt and Protomint. CURIE TAKES ONSLOW. Curie gave another display of 1 his real ability by winning the Onslow Handicap after a stubborn finishing effort. The Tiger was first on to the course proper from Slippery and Curie, with Beacon Fire heading the remainder. The Tiger closed up when tackled by Curie inside the distance, and the latter soon had Slippery beaten, going on to win by a length, while Beacon Fire got up to heat Slippery by a head. The Tiger was next, in front of Normanby and Cottesmore. Normanby fell after passing the post, both horse and rider escaping injury.

AVOODFUL WINS KIA ORA. Repudiation was first out in the Kia Ora Handicap, and when she entered upon the course proper with a useful lead from Hunting Lodge and AVoodful, her victory seemed assured. Inside the distance she weakened suddenly, and AVoodful won comfortably from Hunting Lodge, who also got up to beat Repudiation. Errantry was next. AVAIMATE HUNT ACCEPTANCES. AVAIMATE, July 15.
