HOKITIKA NOTES
[OUB OWN COBRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, April 13. . Reference was recently made to the amount of petty thieving that is going on around the district. Perhaps the meanest of this was a case where a resident taking pity on a “dead-beat,” who asked for assistance, gave him 2/- and the price of a bed. It is reported that during the evening when the resident was out, he returned to the house and got away with a gold chain and a best suit of clothes. The school sports were held on Cass Square yesterday in beautiful weather, and were a decided success. The children were divided into four divisions—Red, blue, green and yellow. No prizes were given, but school honours were sufficient to enthuse the children. The events were keenly contested. The spectacular events of marching and dancing by the senior girls in their respective uniforms were fine indeed. The Hokitika Municipal Band, under Mr C. B. Ross, played an appreciated programme. There was a good' attendance of the public.
