CUSTOMS REVENUE

DECREASE AT WELLINGTON. [PEB PBESB ASSOCIATION.] - WELLINGTON, March 31. Th e net Customs revenue collected in Wellington for the financial year ended to-day totalled £1,985,852, compared with £2,173,997 for the preceding year, a decrease of £188,145 compared with the financial year ended March 31, 1931, when the revenue collected totalled £2,919,698. The revenue collected this month totalled £149,167, compared.' with £162,749 for March, 1932, a decrease of £13,582. The sales tax came into force on February 10, and collections of this new tax at Wellington this month totalled £8894. The duty collected on motor spirit last month totalled £34,169 at 6d a gallon and £19,415 at 4d a gallon, a total, of £53,584, compared with £40,906 at 6d and £13,634 at 2d, a total of £54,536 for March, 1932, a decrease of £952, in spite of the additional tax of 2d a gallon. The amount collected, apart from, that at 6d’ a gallon, is already included in the net Customs revenue given above, being paid into the Consolidated Fund as distinct, from that at 6d a gallon which goes to the Main Highway Fund. The figures for the 12 months were £607,791 and £559,573 respectively, an increase of £48,218.

Collections of tyre tax last month totalled £657, compared with £1386 for March, 1932, a decrease of £729,. For the 12 months there was a decrease of £6126, the figures being £16,780 and £22,906 respectively. Beer excise collections for March were £4288, against £6796 for March, 1932, a decrease of £2508. For 12 months the figures were £60,171 and £61,143 respectively, a decrease of £977.

VITAL STATISTICS. WELLINGTON, March 31. The vital statistics for the quarter, compared with the corresponding quarter of 1932, were:—Births, 506 (503) ; deaths, 247 (254); marriages, 328 (348); by the registrar, 84 (91). The figures for March in 1933 and 1932 were:—Births, 158 (153); deaths, 88 (77): marriages, 139 (150); by the registrar, 38 (30). BANKRUPTCIES. WELLINGTON, March 31. The bankruptcies for the March quarter totalled 10, as compared with 11 in the same period last year. During this month five petitions were filed as against four in March, 1932.
