RUNANGA SPORTS

H. J. HILL WINS BIG CHOP. An excellent programme presented • by the Runanga Sports Club, at Dun--5 ollie, on Saturday, suffered because s of rain, which commenced to fall, when the programme was only half t completed', and continued to make conditions most unpleasant. There was a 3 large attendance of competitors and ■ the public, but the latter were forced ‘ to shelter outside the grounds. There ■ were few onlookers present when the • chief event, the underhand chop, was • being decided. The Club had post- • poned the meeting from the previous ■ Saturday, on account of unfavourable ■ weather, but while it was fortunate in having a large public following last Saturday, the rain spoiled the enjoyment of the meeting. The chopping events were keenly contested, J. Bannister winning the upright, and H. J. Hill, the underhand. In the latter event, the competitors were handicapped by the drenching rain, which made foothold on the logs, and' the grip of the axe, difficult. The footraces attracted large fields, and provided interesting racing. C. Lamont annexed the 100 yards handicap, and J. Devonport accounted for the Sheffield Handicap. The finishes in each event were close, and the times recorded were fast. Various other attractions, which included whippet racing, quoiting, tug-o’-war, and' Highland dancing, assisted towards a well-arranged programme. Following a late start, due entirely to competitors’ indifference as to what time they attended on the grounds, the programme was conducted along smooth-running lines. The President, Mr R. McTaggart, the secretary, Mr A. Harrison, and other officials did all possible, with good results, to carry through the meeting to a successful issue. Detailed results of events were: — 100yds.
