LICENSEE ASSAULTED
INCIDENT AT NGAHERE. An attempted robbery, and serious assault occurred at Ngahere yesterday. The licensee of the Ngahere Hotel Mr L. J. Manthorpe, was brutallyattacked, and as a result of injuries he sustained, he is compelled to remain in his bed. It is gathered that two men called at the hotel yesterday afternoon. One 'of them wanted Mr Manthorpe to “shout” him a drink. The other man meantime made an entry into the kitchen, by getting through a back window. Mrs Manthorpe was absent, and ’had locked the door of the rear portion of the hotel before leaving home. 'While one man kept Mr Manthorpe conversing, the other set about robbing the kitchen. Hearing a noise. Mr Manthorpe locked the front portion of the hotel, and went to the kitchen. On unlocking the door, he faced the second man, who immediately discarded his coat, and set upon the licensee. Spoons and knives, which he had taken, fell to the floor, from the pockets of his coat. In the melee that ensued Mr Manthorpe was severely battered about the head, and bruised from kicks on the body. The men, it is stated, came from Blackball, and thenearly arrest is expected.
