UNEMPLOYED RELIEF. CANBERRA, March 8

When the House of Representatives re-assembled to-day, Mr J. H. Scullin, lhe Leader of the Opposition, moved a motion censuring the Government. for its failure to alleviate the unemployment. He urged that the Commonwealth Bunk should be asked to provide a million pounds a month for lhe absorption of fifty thousand of the unemployed until the situation improved. Mr J. H. Lyons replied that there was a distinct improvement in the unemployed position, and a general improvement in economic conditions. The motion was negatived in a. vote on purely party lines.

N.S.W. RECOVERY. SYDNEY, March 9

Premier Stevens issued a statement showing that the State had made a substantial recovery financially and industrially. since the present Government came into office. He said that the number of persons requiring food relief had decreased from 150,001) to 100,000 in eight months. _ Marked improvement in the financial position was evidence of a substantial recovery. The Government had been able to give substantial tax relief, and was able to envisage further tax relief, which would foster business expansion and employment. 'rhe Government was moving rapidly towards budget equilibrium, and lost business was now being recovered.

Another case in which Assurance Company officials are involved is occupying the City Court. There are four defendants, namely Sydney Smith, Mattison Brian. Oswald Corkbill, and William Page. They are charged with conspiracy to defraud the shareholders of the Commonwealth Life Amalgamated Assurance Associa. t.ion, Limited, of large sums of money. Corkhill and Page are already awaiting trial on another charge. The prosecuting solicitor. Mr Hovey, in outlining the evidence, described it as a. plot to acquire the assets of the Commonwealth. Life Amalgamated Assurance Association, amounting to it quarter of a. million sterling, the ultimate object, being to effect an amalgamation of that, company with the Associated Dominions Assurance Company, whereof Corkhill amt Page are ihe chief oflicials.
