REEFTON NOTES

REEFTON, March 9

The monthly meeting of the Reefton District High School Committee was held last evening; present, Messrs. D. Panckhurst, J. Patterson, C. Cleaver, C. Potter, C. Dobson, J. Hawthorne, H. Campbell (secretary). Mr. Pratt, Headmaster, was also present. Mr. Cleaver was voted to the chair. Apologies were received from Mr. Auld and Mr. T. Dellaca.

The Headmaster’s report stated: — Secondary Department —Roll No.— Boys 28, girls 22; admissions, boys 14; girls 10; withdrawals, boys 7; Girls 6; average attendance, boys 25.7, girls 18.5. Primary Department. — Roll No. —Boys 91; girls 83; admissions, boys 1. girls 1; withdrawals, boys 5, girls 6; average attendance, boys 85.2, girls 78.6. Miss Hutton relinquished her appointment on March 15. Miss B. Z. Eggers has been appointed relieving mistress in her place. Mr. Haigh will not take up his duties until commencement of the second' term. Organisation.—-The organisation of the Secondary Department has been completed. Commercial subjects are being taught as usual including book-keeping, typewriting and shorthand. Dressmaking and home craft classes have been included for girls. Geology and elementary mining and woodwork for boys. Drawing, (instrumental, design and object drawing) is being taken by all pupils in the general course. Proposed by Mr. Panckhurst, seconded by Mr. Potter and’ carried that a letter of thanks be sent from the committee to Mr. McTaggart, Runanga, and to the Greymouth Surf Club for their kind assistance in preparing and making arrangements for the excursion to Rapahoe. It was proposed by Mr. Potter, and seconded by Mr. Patterson, that, further representation be made to the Minister of Education, the Member for the district and to the Board, asking what period is likely to elapse before a new school is built in Reefton and giving a full history of the case to Mr. K. J. Holyoake.—Carried. The secretary reported that two stoves in the school were not likely to do duty during the coming winter. It was proposed by Mr. Panckhurst, seconded by Mr. Patterson, and carried ,that the Board be asked to instal two central heating stoves in their stead.
