JAPANESE QUAKE.

RUGBY, March 6. The King has received an acknowledgement from the Emperor of Japan to a telegram in which His Majesty stated: “I am deeply moved by the news of the disastrous effect of the earthquake and tidal wave in Japan, and would express sincere condolence on the heavy loss of life and my sympathy with the survivors in their suffering.”

RUGBY, March 6.

In reference to the Anglo-Persian oil dispute, Sir J. Simon (Foreign Secretary), said that in accordance with the terms of a provisional arrangement resulting from the League Council meeting in January, direct negotiations under the aegis of the League Rapporteur would shortly be resumed between the Anglo-Persian Oil Company and the Persian Government at Teheran.

COMMONWEALTH LOAN.

LONDON, March 7.

Cash and conversions for the Commonwealth loan totalled £6,184,000. Underwriters will receive 34 per cent.

U.S.A. NAVY

WASHINGTON, March 7.

Mr. Swanson, secretary to the Navy, in a statement to the Press, to-day, said that he would make every effort to build the navy up to the limits of the London treaty, as soon as conditions permitted.

“My opinion is that the fleet should be built up to treaty limits as soon as possible,” Mr Swanson said. “There will be no shift in the fleet until the situation in the Orient changes. It will remain in the Pacific.” He said that he favoured the development of lighter than air craft, at reasonable expense.

OTTAWA, March 7.

The Minister of Railways (Mr Manion) announced in the House, today, that the Canadian Radio Commis-

sion will purchase the radio broadcasting system of the Canadian National Railways.
