Mr Thomas, in reply to Mr De Valera’s intimation, that he had decided to appropriate for normal exchequer requirements, sums received from land annuities and othei' charges, expressed regret at this intimation, and stated: “The United Kingdom Government’s offer of arbitration or negotiation still remains open, and they cannot be understood to acquiesce in the action now an-
lounced.” Mr Thomas said that the sums -with-
held by the Irish Free State amounted to £1,750,000 up to July 15, 1932, when the special duties came into force. The sums withheld between
that date and February 28, 1933, amounted to £2,910,000. The approximate amount collected up to February 28, in special duties and duties under the Import Duties Act on goods imported from the Irish Free State, amounted to £2,123,000.
