COAST FIRE BRIGADES
ASSOCIATION’S MEETING. [OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, November 12. The annual meeting of the ef? t Coast Fire Brigades’ Association was held last evening. The roll call showed all delegates present, viz., Denniston —Captain Burt; Westport Deputy Superintendent Daly; Reefton —Ca,ptain Coxall; Cobden— Captain Gilmore; Greymouth—Secretary Walton; Gtira —Superintendent Hannigan; Kumara— Deputy-Captain McEnaney (who presided); Hokitika Fireman J. Ross; Ross— Secretary A. W. Peebles. Other representatives were also present. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £34. A letter was received from the Blenheim Brigade expressing a wish to join the Association.—The meeting considered it was not wise to have a brigade outside the West Coast area in the Association, and resolved that the Association regretted that it could not admit any outside brigade. The Otira Brigade wrote recommending Fireman Wearne for a vicepresidency, but the Secretary of the Association could not accept the nomination, as it was received after the stipulated time. —The action of the Secretary was .approved.
Captain Coxall (Reefton) referred to the loss by death during the year of Lieut. Powley, and stated the Reefton Brigade desired to perpetuate his memory by presenting a Cup, to be known as the Powley Memorial Cup, for competition by members of the Association. The Cup is to revert to the donor brigade if the Association becomes defunct, and the rules of the competition are not to be altered without the consent of that club. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the Reefton Brigade, and a resolution of sympathy with them and tile relatives of Lieut. Powley was passed, the members standing. Captain Gilmore suggested that as the Association was well supplied with trophies, the cash prizes at competitions be curtailed. This, however, did not meet with the approval of the meeting, as it was thought the amount of cash prizes should he left to the discretion of the Brigade running the demonstration. Foreman J. Williams moved that after demonstrations the presentation of trophies and 'prizes should be made by the President, assisted by leading citizens. Seconded by Captain Burt and’ carried. Foreman Williams referred to the long service of Secretary Walton and to the fact that he had held every office except that of vice-president. He moved that Secretary Walton be made a life honorary member, which would give him the rank of vice-pre-sident, and therefore entitle him to the badge. Several delegates spoke eulogistically of Secretary Walton’s long and faithful services, and the motion was carried unanimously. Mr Walton briefly thanked the members for the honour conferred upon him.
Trustee White referred to a coincidence in the fact that it was in Hokitika in 1903 that the Secretary was made President of the U.F.B.A.
The election of officers resulted: — President, Foreman Callaghan (Westport); vice-presidents: Lieut. Burt (Denniston), and Lieut. Daly (Westport) ; secretary and treasurer, P.P. John Walton (Greymouth); trustee, Superintendent W,hite (Greylmouth). Votes of thanks were passed to Trustee White and Caretaker Garth, of Greymouth, for duties well done. President McEnaney then vacated the chair, which was taken by President Callaghan, who returned thanks for the honour conferred anti’ expressed the desire to cary out his duties efficiently.
As the locale for the next demonstration, Greymouth and Kumara were nominated. The voting gave Greymouth nine and Kumara four. Greym, outh wasj, therefore, selected as the place for the next demonstration.
Matters in connection with the demonstration were discussed, and the following officials appointed: Judges, Captain McFarlane, Deputy McEnaney: Foreman McGregor.
