POSE AS DOCTOR
CHEF’S ARREST ON HONEYMOON
Newspaper photographs of a hotel chef at Clacton-on-Sea, who described himself as the son of a baronet, led to the arrest of Sidney Sherwood, alias Stapard Alpin, 30, on his honeymoon, and his appearance recently before the justices here. He was charged with stealing half a crown from a Wolverhampton girl. Chief-constable Edwin Tilley said that when the photographs appeared in the newspapers, members of the Wolverhampton C.I.D. turned up the “Police Gazette,” and found a picture which they considered identical. In consequence a message was sent to another police force, and prisoner was arrested. Mr Tilley said that on March 30 a Wolverhampton police-officer was rendering first aid to a woman in Dudley. The accused came up and alleged he was a doctor. He was allowed to treat the girl. He afterwards visited her at hex* home, examined her in bed, and prescribed medicine for her, for which he charged 5/-. Next day he made the acquaintance of a crippled girl, said he was a doctor, and gave hen a signed photograph. He met her on other occasions, and once* when walking out carried her purse. When she received the purse back 2/6 was missing.
They had made inquiries at the British Medical Association, and found prisoner was not a doctor. So far as their inquiries had gone, (tie chief constable said, it was alleged that the man was a deserter from the Army and had enlisted in a false name. They had inquiries from other police forces in the country, and it was quite likely other and more serious charges would be brought against him. Sherwood was remanded.
