Mrs J. Young left, yesterday, on a visit to Christchurch.

Mr G. Hibbs has entered the Grey River Hospital, for treatment.

Mr and Mrs G. R. Harker returned yesterday, from a visit to Christ- ' church.

Mrs J- Patterson, Threadneedle Street, who is an inmate of the Grey Hospital, is progressing satisfactorily.

Miss D. O’Hallahan, who has been visiting Christchurch, returned yester. day.

Mr A. Heinz, who has been on a holiday visit to Oamaru, returned yes terday.

Miss B. Stent returned yesterday from a visit to Blenheim and Christchurch.

Mr R. E. Keown who, yesterday, underwent an operation in the Bowen Street Hospital, Wellington, is reported as being satisfactory.

.The death is announced from Auckland of Mr James P.. McPhail, Mayor of Birkenhead, ’■ 1915-21, and since 1929. He was aged 57 years.

A London cablegram announced the death of Professor Graham Wallas, author, Socialist and education authority. He was born in 1858.

Mr Samuel Bowman, of Dunedin, has been appointed Commercial Representative on the New Zealand Dairy Produce Control Board. —Press Assn.

Mr H. P. Williams has been appointed from 211 applicants, to the position of General Manager of the Australian Broadcasting Commission, at a salary of £2OOO a year. Mr Williams has had a long association with broadcasting, both as announcer at Station 2FC Sydney, and in an executive capacity. He also is a journalist, with an extensive knowledge of rural problems. .

The wedding was solemnised at Holy Trinity Church on Wednesday, of Rose Matilda, daughter of Mr and Mrs C. E. Hannam, Nelson, to Herman Frederick, son of Mrs and the late Mr F.’ Lester, Maruia. The bride, who was given away by her brother, Mr F. Hannam, was attended by Miss May Lester, as bridesmaid, and Mr H. G. Lester was best man. Archdeacon J. A. Jermyn performed the ceremony.
