BUCHAREST SENSATION
POLICE CHIEF. AS BANDIT? BUCHAREST, May 18. An astonishing story of the arrest of the head of the Bucharest secret police, Marin Craconescu, on charges of being in league with a number of prominent Roumanian bandits is re j vealed in the evening, newspapers. It was Craconescu Who personally investigated the case in which Prince Bibesco, the American financier, Mr Dewey, and the wife of the Polish Minister to Bucharest, were held up as they were returning across country by motor-car recently. Masked’ bandits stopped the car and robbed them of everything in their possession. Thanks to Craconescu’s work the bandits were arrested within a few days in a disused quarry. Craconescu was given a high decoration by King Carol. A few days ago he was dismissed, and last night was taken into custody. It is alleged that he himself is the head of various bandit organisations, and actually arranged the robbery of Prince Bibesco’s party.
