THE TEA TRADE. LIPTON’S PIONEER ENTERPRISE Lipton’s was originally formed in 1898 to take over the business previously carried on in the United Kingdom and elsewhere by Sir Thomas Lipton. The original share capital of the company was £2,000,000 and two-thirds of the capital was issued to. the famous yachtsman-financier who founded the business.

In 1908 the capital was increased to £2,250,000, and again in 1920 to £3,250,000.

By 1919 this pioneer enterprise had grown beyond all recognition of its modest beginning. It was, in fact, the largest business of its kind in the world, owning its own tea and rubber estates in Ceylon, and made famous throughout the world by the slogan, "From tea garden to teapot.” It boasted 500 branch shops throughout the world.

This colossus was earning big. profits at a steadily expanding rate — £258,530 for 1917, £374,043 for 1918 and £400,000 for 1919.

The business grew steadily until in 1924 there was a suddenxreverse, followed by a period of declining profits, dwindling into a loss, and in 1929 the capital was reduced to £1,422,500. Reorganisation and more forceful advertising put Lipton’s again on its feet. In association with the Meadow Dairy and Home and Colonial groups development and administrative plans were embarked upon, and now that Home and Colonial Stores has secured control, the finances of the company are strengthening. Profits for 1930 were £118,377; those for 1931 were 148,717. The dividend for 1930 was 10 per cent., that for 1931 15 per cent., and on account of 1932 there has already been paid Hi per cent., with the promise of a final dividend at the year-end of large enough amount to give the shareholders their largest return for very many years.—“Advertisers’ Weekly.”
