FIRE OUTBREAKS
A TRAGIC SEQUEL i [PER press association.] PALMERSTON 'N., June 27. A surprising sequel to the fire which totally destroyed the old wooden annexe at the Old People’s Home, Awapuni, early this morning, was the gruesome discovery after daylight, of the charred remains of a man in the still smoking ruins, The victim has not been identified and it is considered that he was a stranger, who sought shelter from the heavy storm overnight.
, WHAKATANE SHOP DESTROYED. WHAKATANE, June 27. Damage to the extent of over £2OOO was caused through fire which broke out in Cailsley’s Building, near Whakatane Post Office, at one o’clock on Sunday morning. The shop of Miss Dingle (milliner) was completely destroyed, as was the stock also, while the roof, ceiling and dividing wall of Cailsley’s stationery shop were destroyed. Stock valued at £2500 was badly damaged by water. Insurances: Buildings £965 (Norwich Union), Cailsley’s stock £5OO (New Zealand), £2OO (South British), £2OO (Northern Insurance). Miss Dingle’s stock £275 (State Fire).
