CAPETOWN, February 20

A striking example of the deeprooted animosity that characterises certain aspects of South African politics is provided by a farmer in the backveld town of Bethal, who refused to allow his daughter to marry a man she was in love with, for the simple reason that the. father disliked the suitor’s politics. “I did not forbid the man the house,” the father said. “I could not do so for a I had no reason to forbid him the house. I have nothing against his character, but I gave him the reasy on why I was against him. The reason is that he is a South African Party man and 1 am a. Nationalist and blood has flowed between these two parties. No daughter of mine shall marry a ‘S.A.P.’ ” The case was one in which the young man was charged with abducting the daughter. The magistrate sympathised with him, but said he, felt compelled to fine him as a warning to other over-ardent suitors.
