COBDEN NOTES
[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] The financial year of the Cobden Town Board will end on March 31, after which ten per cent will be added to rates unpaid. Last year May 25 was allowed as the final date. A legal opinion has given it nevertheless as six months fourteen days from the date the rate demand is made.'
The County Council has advised the Board that, under the finding of the Commission respecting the future inclusion Of North Beach farm lands in the County, that the same will operate from April 1. The area of the Town District is 720 acres, the inclusion of 193 acres (Steer’s and Keeney’s properties etc), means the taking away of a big piece from the big end of the town district, and a present yearly loss of over £l6O. Good relations have existed between the County Council and the Board for some years, but in the interests of the ratepayers the present occasion would afford an opportunity for review, abolitjion, or adjustment of bridge charges concerning Blackball, Teremakau and New River bridges), made at the inception of the Cobden Town District.
As usual at this dry period of the year, a perpetual supply of water is a pressing need. Wonder is expressed that no effort is continued to inaugurate a water service. Newcomers to the town are amazed that so large a town has not undertaken to supply a daily need of this description, when it is remembered that small mining townships have enjoyed a plentiful supply of water for many years. Gardening operations this year have been pursued in some instances, with vigour and intelligence. Much land is often overworked and said to be no good for want of fertiliser. One resident was surprised at the unusual size of potatoes grown from self-sown seed the reason he remembered, was that at the particular spot he had buried vegetable refuse. In the same way second prize for heaviest cabbage was one yedr won at the A. and P. Show. 1
