Galloping MEETINGS TO COME. February 17 —Clifden. February 18,26—W anganui. February 20— Canterbury. February 20, 22—Waikato. February 24', 25—Woodville. February 24,25—-Gore. February 25 —Waiapu. February 27,29 —Te Aroha. RICCA-RTON TRACK NOTES. [special to “stab.”] CHRISTCHURCH, February 16. Track conditions at Ricearton are still disheartening to trainers and unless an improvement is near at hand, it will not .be possible to keep some of the horses in active work. The plough is the only track? in use just now and it has to be watered before daybreak on galloping mornings. Unless rain falls in the interim the course proper will be very hard for Saturday’s meeting.

For the Stud: Jason’s Quest, who has suffered from soreness off and on for some lime past, lias been retui'ned by Mr E. G. McCullough, to his owner, Mr T. Masefield, from whom Mr McCullough had her leased, and she will be retired to the stud. She showed a lot of promise as a galloper, but was always handicapped by the same leg ailment which accounted for both her half brothers, Arikiwai and Toawai 'having their careers cut short. By Diacquenod from Water spray, dam also of Pilliewinkie, Jason’s Quest should earn distinction as a brood mare.

A Speedy Galloper: .Spoon was responsible for an attractive effort at Ricearton to-day covering six furlongs on the plough ,in the good time of 1.15 2-5 easily the best oi the morning’s gallop over the distance. The track had been liberally watered overnight and she was one of the first to use it, so her work was full of merit. She ran the first two furlongs in 25 1-5, three in 36 2-5, and four in 49 2-5, and although carrying a light weight, less than Bst., she finished very strongly. She will probably be engaged in the Craven Plate on Saturday, and will be ridden by D. O’Connor.

Good Track Worker: Another impressive gallop' was credited to Shatter who beat Taragona and Night Recital over seven furlongs in 1.30 2-5. Shatter is a stylish galloper with a marked turn of speed, but is qualifying for a reputation of not racing up to her track form. H© is now to be tried over longer journeys than formerly, commencing with th© Midsummer Handicap on Saturday.. He has invariably done his best work over the closing stages of his races, and there is no reason why he should not master a mile and a-quarter.

Worth Watching: A likely proposition in the Trial Stakes at Ricearton on Saturday is fth© five-year-old mare Muff, by Arrowsmith, from Contempt, dam of Hoa, Who, by th© way, is in solid work un der his new owner, R. Adamson. Muff galloped six TUrlongs this morning in 1.16, finishing on strongly, so she should be seen to advantage over the seven furlongs attached to the Stakes. She has not been raced to any extent, and in her two efforts so far this season has filled third berth in each. She will carry 8.2, and will keep th© field busy throughout.

A Classy Colt: Cricket Bat has not been hand!, capped out of th© Midsummer Handicap, and with A. E. Ellis again in the saddle he is likely to be a good favourite. The Reefton Pair: C. McCarthy returned from Blenheim to Ricearton by motor float on Sunday with Taku Tania and Monastic. Both horses did well on the trip and Monastic especially will be all th© better for his two races. Taku Tama was, it has been stated in many quarters, very unlucky in not being placed first in the big event on the first day’s programme, as it was considered he beat Landmark instead of suffering defeat by half a head. Monastic is to contest the Middle Park Plate on Saturday, and can be expected to take a prominent part in the finish.

NEW YORK, February 15

A message from Agua Caliente states that Phar Lap was given his first workout in mud early this morning. No time was taken of the horse’s effort but it appeared that he “ate up the track.” Trainer Woodcock is satisfied that the horse will be able to run on any kind of track, and appears to be highly optimistic.
