“EXCHANGE” INQUIRY
MR COATES’S STATEMENT. . [special to “stab.”] AUCKLAND, February 15. The following statement, making clear the scope of the inquiry of the Committee of Experts set up to consider the exchange problem and the economic position of the country, was issued by Mr Coates, Leader of the Reform Party: “Some confusion of mind may result, following upon the setting up of a committee of experts announced by thd . Rrinie iMihistdr. It has been stated to me, during recent hours, that the Royal Commission set up will report and recommend upon such general matters as the government will be called upon to consider, as in the case of the Committee of Expert economists. This is not so. The Royal Commission was set up to examine and report upon departmental savings, and amalgamations, and where any such savings can be made. Having in mind, the obvious fall in revenue, the Commission may of course, have views upon the economic questions, but that body has not been specially 'asked to comment upon the wider question. The Committee of Experts will report to Cabinet within a week or ten days, upon the economic and financial conditions, as seen by experts, and subsequent effect upon general financial and the budgetary position of the country.”
