HOKITIKA NOTES

[OUE OWN COBBKBPONDINT.]

HOKITIKA, February 13.

A meeting waft held in the Town Hall last evening of representative citizens to consider the question of recognising the fifty years’ service of Mr J. J. Breeze on the Westland Hospital Board, and the esteem in which he is held as a citizen. Mr W. Jeffries was elected permanent secretary, and after a brief explanation, suggested that the presentation be in a tangible form. The Mayor moved that the presentation take the form of a purse of sovereigns and an address. The function should be short and of a quiet nature, He felt sure the townspeople would be pleased to co-operate in recognising the long service of Mr Breeze.

Mr T. W. Duff seconded, and endorsed the Mayor’s remarks. Other speakers were Messrs G. Heinz, Dr. Teichelmann (who said that Mr Breeze was the only member of the Hospital Board left who welcomed him 35 years ago), Mr Keenan (County Chairman), and Mr F. Selby (Kanieri) an old member of the Board.

The date o£ the presentation was fixed for March 16, which will be the 50th anniversary of Mr Breeze’s election to the Board (then called trustees, March 16, 1882). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs D. J. Evans, W. E. Williams, H. M. Coulson, W. J. Butler, and W. A. Thompson. On Tuesday evening last, Mr F. Ballinger was the guest of the Hokitika Poultry Club, when he was presented with a gold wristlet watch as an appreciation of the valuable work he has done for the Society during the several years he was secretary. Mr C. Hart presided and in making the presentation eulogised the recipient and his work.
