REEFTON NOTES

[OUB OWN COBBESPONDENT.] REEFTON, November 18. The funeral of the late Robert Powley took place yesterday afternoon, the coffin being borne by six members of the Fire Brigade to St. Stephen’s Church, the firebell tolling as the procession passed along the Buller Road. After the church service the church bell tolled as the mourners moved from the church gates. The gathering of residents was large, and the motor cars totalled 35. Deputy-Superintendent White, Foreman Nelson and two firemen represented\ the Greymouth Fire Brigade. Rev. W. Bell conducted the services at thti church and graveside, and the firemen’s burial service was rendered impressively by Secretary A. E. Parkinson, of the Reefton Brigade. The first load of goods for Big River went out yesterday morning by Mr A. W. Jones’s lorry. The necessary repairs to the brickwork around the boilers has been carried out by Mr D. Panckhurst, and it is expected that as soon as a mine manager is appointed, active operations towards the reopening of the mine ’will be commenced. Mrs J. Bolitho, of Black’s Point, left yesterday morning on a holiday visit to the North Island. The funeral of the late Cyril James Smith, took place at Cronadun yesterday morning, and was largely attended, many being present from all parts of the West Coast. Members of the Cronadun Football Club acted as pall bearers, and representatives of the Inangahua Rugby Union were present. The prayers at St. Michael’s Church, Crdnadun, and the services at the graveside were conducted by Rev; Father Aldridge, Miss Scoble, of Gisborne, who has been on a visit to her parents, left by yesterday’s train for the North Island.

Mr and Mrs J. Watt, of Parnassus, drove through from the former place in one day, arriving in Reefton on Monday night. Mrs Watt was formerly Miss Powley, sister of the late Robert Powley. » Mr and Mrs Schwitzer, of Greymouth, who have been on a visit to Mrs Thompson, of the Terrace, left yesterday for Christchurch.
